I just tried the VLC 3.0.0 Nightly build and I started throwing different file formats at it, especially WMVs which it had been choking on for quite awhile now, it they were opening and playing instantaneously! Check it out and forget this crap player.

I was refreshing my video collection this last week and one of the jobs was to get rid of my .mov files and convert them to .mp4. It turns out that the innards of most of the .mov files I have contain WMV and WMA codecs. I think Flip$Mac is the only company presently supporting these formats on the Mac. Is that correct? Also, in using third party apps such as VisualHub and iSquint it appears that they use the Flip$Mac engine to make the files conversions. Unless the "Pro" version of Flip$Mac is present then audio "watermarks" are sprinkled throughout the file. I guess I have no strong objection to the idea of buying that Pro version; however I have just a few of these .mov files and otherwise have had Flip$Mac gone from my machine for several months.

I have tried Handbrake, iFFMPEG, VLC, Mplayer, MplayerX and several others. iSkysoft offers an app which reportedly converts these files. Anyone know of other free or inexpensive applications that might get me through for a few files? All bits o' wisdom are very welcome!

Well, it turns out that the WMA2 and WMV3 codecs are the difficult ones and Flip4Mac is the only app that promises to convert these. However, after first buying the #29 license, and then realizing that I needed the $20 additional license I am now in "Groung Hog Day" mode.

The app happily asks for my serial number to complete the upgrade. I enter it. The app is happy. However, ti does not work and asks again. So I try a restart thinking something needs to be launched at login for the DRM to work. After doing so and relaunching the app the app I now get a box that says "Not Activated." Have uninstalled and reinstalled. Have tried deleting files that are unidentified but which were installed when F4M was installed in areas where apps sometimes stash DRM stuff. No joy. I have sent an email to their tech support amid dreadful warnings that only if I would kindly cough up another wad of bills should I expect any kind of response resembling decent. So, we shall see.

I just wanted to write a followup to this saga. For some reason we were unable to resolve the problem. However Telestream responded very quickly and politely and in the end issued a refund. I suspect there is something in my system that is awry. As for Telestream, I could not have asked for better help and appreciate their efforts.

The good news: there's a new version (3.3). The bad news: Flip4Mac ain't free anymore: "Until recently Microsoft provided the Flip4Mac Player to users for free. As of May 1, 2014, Microsoft will discontinue this free distribution."

Price is $5.95.

Why the hell isn't this awful format dead yet? WMV is one of the worst crappy video formats ever perpetrated on the world. When both it and flash are gone life will be so much better.

While I love the simplicity of the software, I will NOT be paying (Nor will I point my clients to pay) for this. It is flat out robbery. I would be willing to pay if it were under $2.00 for the player, but $6 is WAY too much. Use the link below to get the archived FREE version, or look other places for FREE software that does the SAME THING!
Perian, and other software is STILL FREE.
You are greedy money grubbing slimeballs, Telestream for wanting to charge $6 for this!

Khama may be a bit impassioned and vitriolic, still I echo the sentiment, and I too shall seek an alternative solution.

Agreed.

Sadly, last time I looked Perian was not working with Mavericks. So for me that leaves down rev Flip4Mac. When that breaks, then I guess it just gets the "gong." I am tempted to remove the old version right now just to see if I am missing anything at all.

Hi Khama: Flip Player is still available as a free download. You can find it here: http://www.telestream.net/flip-player/download.htm Flip4Mac WMV QT Components are the product that is no longer available for free. When you install Flip4Mac, you also receive Flip Player--which is where some of this confusion may have started. Microsoft is no longer distributing Flip4Mac and Telestream has royalty/license obligations to the companies whose underlying technologies we used to develop them. If you are looking for Flip Player, you can find more information on here - http://www.telestream.net/flip-player/overview.htm - Good luck and let us know if we can help.

Flip4Mac - Yes it is available there, but you do not list that on the main page! www.telestream.net/flip4mac/ re directs to http://origin.telestream.net/flip4mac/ where it lists player as $5.95 ! Why have you buried the free player? You no longer list it on the main page, and to find the free one you have to dig and dig and dig to find it. Main page lists Player as $5.95!

So Microsoft was paying the royalties for the end user for Flip Player, is what you are saying? And you don't wish to?

I understand playing for the additional features of the advanced versions. I can even understand paying a SMALL fee for the new player version. I just cant stomach $6 for a program that was once free! Anything under $2 I could accept, but 3x that, no way.

I will use the Free player, until it no longer works, at which point FREE VLC will become the player of choice.

I beg you to reconsider your pricing on the new Player. Bring it down to $2 or less, and I am willing to bet you will see more revenue. $6 is just too much, when there is other software out there that will play WMV for free.

This isn't a demo, it requires a license/registration to install.

Thanks for the heads up. I see there's no free player listed in their pricing now. It's $5.95 minimum to use this software.

I concur. Telestream no longer offers a free version of ANY of their products, including Flip for Mac. As for myself, I will be looking for other solutions.

Flip Player v. 3.2.1 is still here, just well hidden:
http://www.telestream.net/flip-player/overview.htm

What their own comment of "being well hidden" means is you have to locate a link entitled "Flip Player" buried in some descriptive text and click on it to be taken to a page where you can download a previous version which, based on their own descriptions, may not be completely compatible with OSX 10.9 (Mavericks). What it seems like they are really saying is that they are transitioning to a paid app that you must purchase if you wish it to be compatible with the latest OSX operating system. So if something requires that diligent of a search to find it, it is not fully compatible with the current Mac OS and they offer a fully compatible version for a price, then from a practical and realist standpoint, it is not free.

Official last version is 3.2.0.16, the one that MacUpdate suggests 3.2.1.2 is probably beta and in fact it did screw my registration for upgrade to PRO, do not install!

More a comment on Apple. Why do I need this 3rd party product to view/hear Windoze media in Quicktime Player when I can Quicklook the files successfully in the Finder? Obvious the Mac OS has a codec for Windows Media built in so why doesn't Quicktime Player just use that?! The less extra stuff installed the better.
(I'm using Mountain Lion BTW)

Apple has done a lot to reduce quicktime avail to 3rd party APIs. Quicktime player X for example doesn't allow any 3rd party codecs. You are forced to use discontinued quicktime player 7 to use them it's why flip4mac went from being really good to being an external app :\ and why perian team basically said "f this" and ended that. by closing quicktime, it's apple that ruined things.

Apple is still rebuilding Quicktime, post 7.
Just like FCP, Pages, etc. I guess QT is a bit lower in the priority list.

The functionality may well return in the future.

I have flip4mac studio and it's pretty handy, when I need it - Fission also handles wmv.
