Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people who want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and more. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy.

What's New
Version 2.2.35-11 (reports as 1.0 in Finder): Release notes were unavailable when this listing was updated.
This is NOT 'Tor 1.0'. There is no 'Tor' except as a project name. This is TorBrowser. AND: There is no TorBrowser '1.0'. The current version is 2.2.35-11. (The Get Info box for TorBrowser has always said '1.0' and will always continue to say '1.0').
No wonder people get confused about the Tor Project when even the download sites can't get the version numbers right! If you really want to start understanding the Tor Project, visit the Tor Project:
https://www.TorProject.org/
The Tor Project writes two main pieces of software:
1) TorBrowser, as linked above.
2) Vidalia, which is NOT linked above. Here is the link:
https://www.torproject.org/projects/vidalia.html
Tor technology takes time to learn. Start with the TorBrowser then dive into Vidalia when, or if you are ready.
Tor is helpful for maintaining our US Constitutional right to PRIVACY. Thanks to the fascist Corporate Oligarchy corruption of our US government, our constitutional right to privacy as citizens on US soil is being destroyed. Fight back with the Tor Project and other privacy maintenance software. Tell the Corporate Oligarchy and their political puppets to get out of the USA and die in some forsaken hole of their own digging and devising. They are not welcome here.
1. If you want to be specific, the actual name is the Tor Browser Bundle. The developer's web site refers to it simply as Tor at times, so this is not some major violation of naming etiquette or a show of disrespect.
2. Vidalia is now included in the Tor Browser Bundle, and is no longer available as a separate binary download.
3. The reason MacUpdate lists the version as 1.0 in the title is because their MacUpdate Desktop software identifies updates via the "get info" string and matches it to what is stored in their database backend. It's the responsibility of each developer to make sure that string reflects an accurate version number, if they want third-party sites to list it properly.
In the country I was in (Thailand), got in Safari:

I love this thing. :)
I played with PGP and also Tor and Vidalia over the past few years but I am really not paranoid enough to use them every day. But I love what they promise. And Tor is essential for very many people who are in danger and who don't live a life as free as I think I live.
I don't need this every day. I really don't. But it makes me happy that it exists and is available in the same way that I have happy that PGP and other public key encryption apps are still unbreakable. It makes me feel like I am free and I truly live in freedom. So, while I don't really have an issue with anonymity (should I) I love that it is freely accessible. Especially in other countries where they aren't so free.
This is the first 1.x version of Tor — HOW CAN YOU NOT LIST "WHAT’S NEW”? Don’t you think we’ll want to know all that’s been changed, dropped or added to the first non-development version before trusting our online security to Tor 1.0?
I wonder why after all this time, MacUpdate doesn't list Vidalia seperatly? I understand they work together from the same project, but I think it would cause less confusion if it was a least mentioned up top there or something.
This listing was previously for Vidalia, but it looks like it got changed to be for Tor instead. An additional link on this page to Vidalia would be helpful.
Excellent software if you need to hide your browsing habits or have to deal with sensitive information on the web. Combined with Proxy Switchy!, it's possible to activate Tor with a single click on Google Chrome. If you live in a country that restricts internet use, I suggest downloading the Tor Browser Bundle from their website. Just put in on a USB flash drive and you can access the net from any computer without leaving any traces of your activity.
There exists plenty of ways to prevent Google from acquiring your data, the most well known of these being the extension called Ghostery which effectively prevents third party snoops from operating when you browse.
In fact, the masterminds at Google aren't the main threat anyway : the sheer amount of data they have to wade through means that the worst that they will do to you is tailor ads to your personal tastes. If everybody is watched at the same time, no one is watched closely.
The real danger comes from Javascript and other imperfect characteristics of the internet which leave you vulnerable to dedicated spies.
If you are are paranoid, then yes by all means use the TorButton with Firefox instead, but I'm confident that the solution that I've outlined in my first post will help all but a tiny fraction of users achieve a sufficient amount of privacy.

Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy.
Tor aims to defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal anonymity and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Communications are bounced around a distributed network of servers called onion routers, protecting you from websites that build profiles of your interests, local eavesdroppers that read your data or learn what sites you visit, and even the onion routers themselves.Tor's security is improved as its user base grows and as more people volunteer to run servers. Please consider volunteering your time or volunteering your bandwidth. And remember that this is development code - it's not a good idea to rely on the current Tor network if you really need strong anonymity.
By default, Tor is configured to run at startup. If you do not want Tor to run on startup, you can disable this by selecting "Customize" in the Installer, and then un-checking the "Tor Startup Script" box. Be sure to leave the other boxes checked. Once the installer is finished and your computer restarts, Tor will start automatically. Tor comes configured as a client by default. It uses a built-in default configuration file in /Library/Tor/torrc, but most people won't need to change any of the settings.
Privoxy is installed as part of the Tor bundle package installer. Privoxy is a filtering web proxy that integrates well with Tor. Once it's installed, it will start automatically when your computer is restarted. You do not need to configure Privoxy to use Tor. A custom Privoxy configuration for Tor has been installed as part of the installer package.
