Gimpshop is a Gimp modification that features menu layouts, dialogs and naming conventions similar to those found in Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop users should feel right at home using Gimpshop. The Gimp, on which Gimpshop is based, is a powerful, open source image editing application. For more info on the Gimp see this page. Gimpshop is essentially the same program with some cosmetic changes.

GIMPshop can be installed on Snow Leopard, but you have to replace some libraries that don't work with the new version of X11.

go to:

http://www.strayprocess.com/blog/gimpshop-snow-leopard

for instructions. The libraries are at:

Forget Gimpshop under Leopard for the time being. It crashes every time. Ironically, this is actually an improvement, as since Leopard/X11 change, it wouldn't even launch except for parking its icon in the dock. I blame this on the new X11 as included in Leopard.

Just got (finally) the 2.4 PPC version of Gimp running on my 1.2ghz iBook after the 10.5.2 and x.org X11-1.2.4 updates, so I will be using that while I watch for a Leopard-usable version of Gimpshop, hopefully based on the 2.4.x Gimp.

Apple doesn't appear to have done a whole lot to assure X11 functionality under 10.5.2. Guess they expect you to spend $600 for P-shop. Ain't happenin'...

Try LiveQuartz http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18064

More more Mac OS X.

If you need a more complete Photoshop like, then try Pixel (not free) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18055/pixel

Over more than one year ago I sent a suspicious Photoshop 6 copy I acquired at *B*y to Adobe, because they claimed this kind of copies are illegal. Neither got my CD back nor any response since, it's a pity. Therefore I used legal PSE 2 and 3, and with the Earthbound light extension it still works fine for me.
Gimpshop is a big step forward, the most shortcuts for tools working exacly like in PS and PSE for MS-Windows because the command-key is at the control-key. On my 1.2 Ghz G4 with 1.2 GB RAM Gimpshop works fast and stable and the best news is the brand-new free UFRaw plugin:
http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html#Mac
Although Mac Gimpshops development has a delay compared to the Linux version, it's a very good tool for private use and we can really look forward to the plugins like Refocus, Wideangle Lens, CMYK - and maybe someone who will spent some work on this somewhat elaborate interface.
Gimpshop didn't replaced my PSE yet but I'm working on it. Thank you very much!

This is being written with only about 15 minutes of experience with the app.

Seems to run very well on my Intel iMac (early 2006). Don't see any "RAW" support but I've not read the docs at all and I should RTFM before complaining, right?

I like the Photoshop key equivalents; If I'm going to learn something beyond iPhoto, it might as well have a similar-to-PS UI, right?

I ran the "yellow cursor" fix before running anything; can't say whether I had the problem or not before - never saw it in other X11 apps.

re: Copying between the app and OSX clipboard - very nice.

I'll try to learn more and post a review soon. At first blush, however, maybe I don't even need Photoshop? :D

This is fast on my MacBook, compared to Photoshop in Rosetta ;)

So far opens all my PSDs. I'm impressed. Although I can't figure out how to edit text...

This app does not currently work under Snow Leopard 10.6.3/X11 2.3.5. It attempts to cache fonts and then crashes.

After 'caching fonts...' for awhile, it states that "Gimp-2.2 has unexpectedly quit". I've heard that this has to do with Leopard's new X11 implementation, to which a solution is posted at:
http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin

I must be mucking something up though, since it still gives me the same error afterwords.

Running Gimpshop 2.2.11 and Leopard 10.5.1 on a mac book pro duo.

If you are using 10.4 or later, install X11 off your OS install disk. None of the downloadable versions of Apple's X11 1.0 work with 10.4.
