ProVoc has a great quiz and card editing interface. It also allows a 3rd side to its cards (which is great for Chinese because you need the English, Chinese character, and the pronunciation). It has very useful features BUT and this is a big but, the study algorithm does not work. Supposedly the program can quiz you based on difficulty and the last time studies. But in my month long experience with this program it did not seem to work. I kept getting quizzed on the same words over and over instead of introducing the words that hadn't been studied in a while or have a high difficulty. And this even after I moved the difficulty slider during the quiz.
If you're looking for a good study algorithm and a free program, try Genius. It works much better for me even though it only allows two sides to your flashcards.
ProVoc would be the program of choice if not for the algorithm issue.
ProVoc is back!!!! Cannot believe this. Still haven't found any substitute for it. Please developer, get this application back on track. I'm more than happy to become a registered customer if this helps to support the continued development for this app… I'm looking at iPhone application syncing and the like.
Just got back from the developers site where I was told that ProVoc has been retired. No further updates, no support. The app has gone the way of the Dodo.
This is a shame as it was easily and by far the best vocabulary trainer in the market. I only hope somebody will continue where Arizona Software left off.
This is probably the best educational tool that I have found for learning new languages. I have used it since 1.7 to help me learn Italian and Spanish vocabulary. I've even used it to learn new words out of the English dictionary. This past week, I have used it to learn Hiragana and Katakana, and using it diligently, I learned the symbols for both "alphabets" in only 3 days. That may sound rediculous, but I recognize them about 90% of the time (not bad for only a week of exposure).
Really, I find it hard to fault ProVoc. It is very simple to use, very flexible, and doesn't act up for any odd reason. It has never crashed on me, and has actually become easier to use with every release. Rather than become another target for people to scream "bloatware" at (which they do just way too much lately), each feature and upgrade has been very useful and greatly appreciated.
I would love to see Danish and Indonesian support included. Adding new languages would probably a lot quicker if it was possible to import the dictionaries that StarDict uses:
Wow, an easy to use flashcard program with audio, image and video support! A beautiful yet fully functional full screen mode with complete testing options and an easy to understand history graph shows what you got right or wrong. Can be used for much more than languages, under preferences->languages just add question and answer as categories and deselect unneeded options. Many thanks to the developers for giving the mac community this amazing FREE!!! educational tool.
Perfect for my Thai vocabulary needs, and free too!
The best thing about it though is that it just keeps getting better and it seems every time I start up the app there's an update with new and useful features.
Thanks Mr. Developer!
I'm having problems with the Hebrew fonts. I downloaded some Hebrew lessons. I go to Preferences, under Francias hit Set, I change it to a desired Hebrew font. Nothing happens, just a Romanized font. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

To solve your problem with it...
Pry open your wallet and buy a Mac that was built in this Century.
