Trying to play a 2.7GB avi video. VLC and Quicktime would not do it, nor would MPEG Streamclip. XinePlayer played it no problem. Great work. How about a universal binary?

Sadly, every file I try to open says it can't read it. This is a shame, as the interface is much better and more Mac-like than either VLC or MPlayer. Fix up some bugs, add the "ten second skip" of MPlayer, and support all the major file formats, and it'll be a winner.

Although the true trump card will be whoever is first to play WMV9 video on the Mac. I've got dozens of anime fansubs that I'm waiting to play but can't (and no, Windows Media Player will NOT work, as they are in an avi container).

What version of xine-lib does it use? 1.0.1 is out, will you release a new version?
I found a bug: if you try to open a file that XinePlayer won't play (like a pls or m3u file), it won't accept any more entries in the Open URL menu... You can't delete the text string (usually it's file://...).
Thanks for the great port of xine to OS X! :)

If you'd like to make XinePlayer the default DVD player (instead of Apple's player), use the Script Editor to create a new AppleScript file with the following content:

=== cut here ===
tell application "XinePlayer"
activate
end tell

tell application "System Events"
if UI elements enabled then
click menu item "Open DVD" of menu "File" of menu bar 1 of process "XinePlayer"
end if
end tell
== cut here ===

And then in the CDs & DVDs pane of the system preferences, set this script to launch when inserting a video DVD.

Honestly, the media player I've been looking for for OS X. Plays the VOB and TiVo MPGs that QuickTime/DVD Player won't. More importantly to me, will play files effectively over a fast network with no wait time---VLC and mplayerOSX copy the whole file first. As long as I'm comparing, it also doesn't have the sound glitches experienced at the beginning of a file in VLC and it does have a rewind button.

It's not perfect, though. Video starts up in half-size by default, and I haven't found an obvious way to change that. Further, the deinterlacing doesn't seem to produce as nice results as does VLC. A few other features would be nice: a way to set the default sound level, for instance.

Still, this has found a nice little home on my dock, and is the only video player I'm likely to use every day.

Won't play episodes of RedVsBlue in quicktime format, neither will VLC, but of course QuickTime player handles them fine.

I'm looking for an every-format player, QT is usually junk. It doesn't support any standard Windows formats, but this apparently can't even play QuickTime?! It's not that much work to include QT support guys, really.

QuickTime 6 format streams (aka MPEG 4) are supported. QuickTime itself is merely a transport stream and hence some movies might play or not depending on the codec used to encode them.

On your second point, if it is easy to add QuickTime support I await your patch with eager anticipation. :)
