Converts images to music in an interesting way. See what your favorite pictures sound like! SoundOfAnImage is written in Objective-C using both Cocoa (AppKit) and Carbon (QuickTime). I wouldn't exactly call this high-quality code; SoundOfAnImage is more of an art project to me than a serious piece of engineering.
What's New
Version 1.1:
  • MIDI Export - This was by far the top user request: SoundOfAnImage can now export MIDI files. Note that it always exports with the tempo set to 120 beats per minute; you can change that in whatever scoring/MIDI editing app you're using.
  • I fixed a couple of the most commonly-reported bugs. They were pretty weird and minor so I won't list them here.
Requirements
PPC, Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

You know what would be really cool, being able to take music and turn it into an image!

Neat little program - fabulously pointless, yet infinitely interesting. Feed it an image, and through the magic of algorithms it generates MIDI output. If you tweak the instruments, you can get some really awesome songs out of this program - on par with half of the electronic "musicians" out there.

But, as others have said, there needs to be a way to save the output, or the songs, or something - maybe lump the image, tempo, and instrument settings together into a file to save, and AIFF output would be nice... though you can just use WireTap to record to a file. Still, until there's some better saving features, this is a toy - not a program. It's a very fun toy, however.

Nice little app and very cool.

I can only echo the other reviewers in saying it would great to be able to save it. It looks like it's using QuickTime's Musical Instruments, so even to save as a MIDI file would be helpful, and then you could export that yourself later to AIFF or MP3 or whatever.

Still great fun.

There is not a lot of use for this app, but it is fascinating and oddly addicitve. And it's free.
