It operates quite normally though I have been using this software for five years.
It is a tool to be recommended to everybody. I wish to express my gratitude to the author.

I would like to explain this issue. MSC by default searches for new messages in all mailboxes. So you may have new mail in some place other than your inbox. Hence the unread count set to one.
If you want MSC to behave exactly like Apple Mail, i.e., to display only the number of new messages in the inbox, open the Preferences panel and select the "Check INBOX only" option.

This is a real winner, at least for us dock-hiders, and the new mail count feature makes it better than ever. What's to complain about??

I like it a lot. It does exactly what I want. I always hide my Dock, so having to mouse down to the bottom once in a while to see if any mail had arrived was rather boring. With MSC I only have to glance at the menubar to see if new mail has arrived. Thats all I need - please don't make it do all kinds of needles things :)

As one of the earlier reviewers said:
"If you really want to make it indispensible, add the possibility for it to check and notify of new mail without having to open Mail.app."
I agree totally! There is a big gap for a simple notifier that just works. Mailticker was the best by far but has recently died a death. I would happily pay to find a similar application or one to provide this simple notification facility.
Still, a nice app! Thanks to the developer

Of course it would be great to have such a feature. However, MSC completely relies upon Apple Mail. Please note that, in order to implement such a feature, I should write a completely different application...

Mail Status Control can run with Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion.
No problem.
I am thankful to the developer of this software.
