soulseeX is a SoulSeek client for Mac OS X. A lot of time and effort have gone into making this software a quality stable product. However, be aware that this is BETA quality software. Some features you may expect may be missing and others may not work as you expect them to. You may also experience crashes and other bugs with this software, even though they would typically be rare.InstructionsAs this version SoulseeX was released years before port changes were made in the soulseek network you will have to need go into the preferences and change the port to 2242 for the server as well as in the third box for Connection listener more...

What's New

Version 1.0b6 build 2216:
  • This build works with Intel and while unintentionally does still work in OS X 10.7 Lion.
  • Added a "Get Soulseek Privileges" item to the soulseeX menu. Note: you can no longer donate to Soulseek directly through their homepage you must do it through a slsk client.
  • Added Korean language encoding support.
  • Added the date to the ssX console logs.

Requirements

Mac OS X 10.3 or later

Proper Instructions:

1. You want the latest release 2216 which is found at http://chris.schleifer.net/ssX/builds/ssX-06082006-2216.dmg
This works on Intel and also in Lion, but also for PPC / Leopard.
(This is the ONLY working client for PPC, that I know of anyway)

2. You must go into the preferences and change the port for the server to 2242 as well as in the third box for Connection listener "Alt. port range".

3. Enter your User Name and Password. You probably need to create an account at http://www.slsknet.org/news/user/register, but I have used just any user name and password with this client and it has worked.

With this the soulseek network lies before you. It's wonderful.

I have yet to try the official client http://www.slsknet.org/news/node/1 but will.

On important note: The only gotcha I've had with SsX is that you must make sure that when you set up a share (Controls - > Set Shared Files), after you have selected your shared folder that you make sure to set THE TOP PARENT FOLDER to "share to nobody" and then set only the folder you want shared to "shared to everybody" or "shared to friends". Otherwise you risk sharing your whole disk!

isoul is buggy. ssx has some unfinished features but works and if you place its windows with the help of divvy or sizeup, it makes up for the divided gui. they're both abandoned, tho.

soulseek and winmx are the 2 apps i miss from windows (never cared about other distributed network apps which only let you search for individual songs).

could soulseekqt be our last hope for the real thing on osx?

Well, the soulseekqt I downloaded from here: http://www.slsknet.org/news/node/1 (nightly build 7), is the best soulseek client I've used on Mac so far. Haven't tested it extensively, but the search and download appear to work well.

thanks. last time i checked the download page they didn't have mac ready releases. scrolling a file list or user list (in a room) is very slow, tho (cpu activity increases).

i'll keep an eye on it.

Works great for a few minutes, then hangs, then hangs other applications, then hangs the mouse. Memory management seems to be at fault. (This is on a PPC eMac 1.4 with a gig ram). Shame, because the connection and upload/download management knocks spots off any file-sharing competition.

Good, stable Soulseek client for OS X... desperately needs to be updated though, as it still is only a PowerPC native app. However, I have used it for many hours at a time on an Intel Mac, it all works as it should, and has never crashed on me. Interface seems a bit out-dated (multiple windows everywhere) but at least it exists and works.

No updates since May 2005. Must be a piece of abandonware. I hope I'll be proven wrong.
