MemoryCell is a MenuExtra for OS X that provides a quick overview on the memory (RAM) being used by each running application. Install MemoryCell, and the memory usage of the foreground application will be shown right in the menu bar. Use this knowledge to restart any application that's slowing down the system by using too much memory.
Does anybody know if the default view of private memory can be changed? Is there a pref file that can be changed so that I can have it display Real Memory at startup rather than changing it every time?

I've used this 'hack' in a program of my own, and calling it a hack is totally misleading. There is no custom code, no failure point or nebulous injection of executable code into your system. It's just that Apple doesn't tell us how to access the NSMenuExtra system up front, so you have to be clever to figure out how. The only drawback is that Apple doesn't guarantee it'll still work in new versions of the OS. But that just requires tiny updates like MemoryCell 2.0.1 every once and a while.
I think your opposition is unfounded.

Uses too much space on the menu bar.

I'd use this if it were a normal NSStatusItem, and not a menu extra hack

This is a really useful program that on activity monitor you can monitor cpu and network activity, ram being used, where everything is being used and many other statistics. Thank you for making this program.

Nice, I like it, seems to work quite well. Thanks to the developer for offering it free.
