Some five years after its release Chessmaster now goes universal. About time. However, the DVD still needs to be present in the drive... and quite frankly: this is annoying for a game like this. No warranty on the DVD either as it's just too old.
I've stopped using Chessmaster 9000 and purchased Shredder Chess instead. It's simple graphicwise, but more effective and stronger in its thinking. Also, you don't need the DVD present (forget it anyway on travels most of the time).
I won't purchase any game from Feral ever again. My experience with Chessmaster 9000 was THAT bad.

1.) The 1.0.2 patch solved all of the major reported issues we had with the game, we sold thousands of copies of Chessmaster and on the whole we have had a lot more good comments than bad since we released 1.0.2. After this we even have updated (again) with a 1.1.2 universal version of the game. This is not to say that their are not issues just that a lot of people might not suffer like you did.
The original 1.0 release had a patch released quickly (1.0.1) to fix some reported problems (and to add French support), the second 1.0.2 patch was released to support 10.4 which had new libraries that needed to be supported.
2.) Chessmaster 9000 has been out for a while now, it was released a long time before Intel Mac even existed. The game ran under rosetta on Intel Macs (although a little slow in parts) meaning you could still play without a UA patch. The Universal update was provided free of charge as an update to all users of the game so we can continue support of this title. Updating to Intel native takes a lot of work and is a lot more effort than a standard patch.
We pride ourselves on supporting older products, the fact we support and patch games that are as old as Chessmaster 9000 we think is a good thing rather than a bad thing as you can see we have a track record of supporting products and caring about our products over the long term not just the first year or six months.
3.) We offer a disk replacement service for the cost of a disk and postage. This covers any potential issues people might have with needing the disk and damaging it on route. Sadly the disk check is their due to rampant piracy of the title which is hindered by using a original DVD check. We are looking at other solutions like online checking instead but this raises different issues which people might not like.
Finally I am sorry you are so unhappy with the game and that you don't want to buy another Feral game ever, rest assured we do always strive to make the best game we can and make it as Mac like as possible.

We haven't come across a fix, but it's nice that they're attempting to find one, and keeping me informed while doing so.
I'll also offer this: I have an upgraded CPU, and though I've had zero issues with it in the past - with any other software - the developer thinks this could be the issue with my machine.
I've written customer support, but have not recieved any kind of reply. This is dissapointing. This is not freeware and it seems to me that some responce to these issues is only fair. Too bad, it's a fun game.

I'm running a 1GHz PPC G4 with 896 MB ram and OS 10.4.4. Chessmaster crashes with every attempt to play it.

We are looking into the issue but this currently appears to be an issue outside of Chessmaster 9000. Regardless we are following this up with the user in the support system.
About the replying, we have been at MacWorld and hence we have not been answering support as quickly as our support team was at the show. We also have been having issues with either our ISP or US ISP's marking emails as spam meaning that some end users don't get replies. This appears to have been solved in most cases now.
If you don't get a reply within 3 working days, you can open a support request via a web form at support.feralinteractive.com.
Best Regards,
Edwin

The patch is up to beta 10 now, so it looks like there is more work being done. The patch does partially alleviate the problem I mentioned below about cpu hogging -- when you switch to another app or the Finder, CM9000 suspends operation, releasing the cpu *if* there isn't an analysis going on.
The only bug is that to get the focus back on CM9000, you can't click in the game window, you have to click on the dock icon. Weird.

My only complaint is that the game hogs the cpu -- pegging the usage at 100% -- no matter what settings I choose for Engine Priority, Blunder Alert, Mentor Lines, Pondering, etc. Heck, the cpu is pegged at the *title window*, before a chess board is even displayed.
Bug alert: The Engine Priority setting can't be changed back from the low setting. Set it back to high, close the Engine option window, reopen it, and the setting is back on Low again, not that it seems to matter since the cpu is pegged regardless.
The *only* time the cpu comes down is when choosing a menu item.
CM9000 is very nice (I had previously purchased it for a PC), but the CPU hogging issue must be fixed.
Also, is it somehow possible to load an Xboard engine as a personality, as in the Windows version?

My ratings reflect the potential this game has, but it's virtually worthless as is.
