This is a very useful and easy to use database manager for books. Its most outstanding feature is the ability to import data from Amazon.com and especially import multiple books from a list of ISBN numbers (at least those that are the same as the UPC code).

I am currently using it to get the data from Amazon which can be exported and then imported into my homegrown Filemaker Pro databases. Unfortunately the images are not exported in the text export.

Being a version 1, I hope, it lacks certain features I find essential in a book database:

1. There is no search function for the database. For example, I cannot find all books by author or any other field and have them displayed separately as a found set.

2. I cannot sort on more than one field, eg author and publication dates... with separate ascending/descending sorts.

3. I cannot change data in the table view.

4. I use a genre field. A popup menu from which I can select from a list of genres is important for me. Similarly, a popup in list view for have/need/want is and for any custon field woul dbe useful.

5. I do not like the drop down windows/dialogs, as they cover up data I may need to see. If they were resizable this would help. Better would be to use a separate window I can move to the side and keep open.

6. There is no way to change the display font/size/color.

7. Formatting a field as a number or date would be useful, esp for sorting.

8, Reording fields by dragging the column label would be a useful OS X - like behavior.

One behavior I consider a bug. If I add a book via an Amazon lookup, it unsorts the database which I find annoying, esp if I am sorted on a field off the window.

I hope the developer considers these as suggestions for further development, rather than criticisms.

Of the three or four book catalogs written for OS X this is probably the best designed (though the competition is very close). As a version 1 app it has features to add, such as more lookup and export/import options. It's more expensive, and the cost can only be justified by its lookup and scanning capabilities (the demo is limited to 10 entries, not enough in my view to get me to spend $20). However it's good to see diversity in the software niche. Everybody gains by this: we don't want to see just one app dominating the market. I'd like to encourage the developer, he's got some good ideas.

This program is a bit late to the party. There are like 15 book database programs out there, and this one doesn't add anything new to the genre. The only differences I see are that 1) it's the first that's written in RealBasic (with the slightly unpolished look and feel which is the hallmark of RB apps), 2) it's $20 more than Books and $5-10 more than mature shareware programs like Booxter, and 3) it's import, export, and online database lookup options are more limited than those of any competing program.
No rating, just one question: what's the point?
