StartupSound.prefPane is the software which controls the volume of the startup sound of your Mac computer. StartupSound.prefPane mute the startup sound without changing the output volume setting. And StartupSound.prefPane limits the startup volume so that it may not become loud even if you make the output volume louder. To set up the startup volume, you select the "Startup Sound" pane added to the "System Preferences."

This was great while it latest. Does no longer work on 10.9 Mavericks though. Whatever settings you set on the next restart the chime hits your ears and the settings are ignored.

Typical Apple mindset: Not offering any choice to the user and forcing stupid stuff like startup chimes on them. A simple ON | OFF switch would solve the problem, but Apple prefers to ignore the issue.

Worked for a while, haven't changed my OS, still using Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work until you do at least one restart, which of course, defeats the purpose. So, I'll restart my iMac, it does so with MAXIMUM volume, then once I open it, I find the volume control has now been turned all the way off!
So, it's the worst of all possible worlds, extra loud restart, then I try and listen to something, only to find the sound has now been muted......

Great app but It does not work on OS X 10.8.1 & 10.8.2.
PPC code maybe... cause it's still working on a 10.6.8 with an iMac mid 2007.
I try many other software but there is the same problem;
The only solution : cocktail 6.2.1 for OS X 10.8.2. it works fine... but not free.
This soft is very usefull, not only for the startup sound :-))

Unfortunately, this does not work anymore with my iMac and OS X 10.8. I can change the position for the startup volume in the preference pane and I can close the lock (to prevent further changes), but when I restart I have the same loud sound as before and when I then look at the preference pane the lock is open and the position of the regulator has changed back to where it was before.

Does anybody know how to make this work with OS X 10.8 and an iMac?

Hi, I have a Mac book pro OS X Lion 10.7.4. I Downloaded the startupsound.prefpane 1.1b3. It would not work with my computer. I uninstalled it but the whistle( startup sound) is still in my system preferences.. How do you get rid of the whistle (startup sound).. and since I've installed and uninstalled . I can NOT drag and drop. Does anyone have any answers for these problems? I really need to be able to drag and drop for my work. Thanks

The preference pane is in one of the two Library/PreferencePanes folders on your hard drive. Either in harddrive/Library/PreferencePanes or in harddrive/Users/username/Library/PreferencePanes. Just delete it there.

The Library in your user folder is usually hidden but you can access it from the Finder by clicking onto Go (in the menu bar), then pressing the Option key and then choosing Library from the drop down menu.

You can also right-click or control-click on a preference pane's icon in System Preferences, and select Remove "name" Preference Pane from the contextual menu.

2.5 stars for a software that works fine on a MacBook Pro (Early 2011), but does not work or have any effect on the startup sound on a MacBook Air (Mid 2011).

No updates since 2009 make this look rather dead.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD/INSTALL "STABLE" if you are Intel Lion. I did not read the comments and the stupid installer installed it then said it couldn't run it and NOW THE UNINSTALL CANT RUN since its for STUPID POWERPC.. What a terrible programmer to not check before the install!!!!

Now I CANT GET IT OFF MY COMPUTER.

Something that was going to take 1 min has now been an hour of hell while I am at work. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.

It says "StartupSound.prefPane 1.0.3 (PPC stable release)". Why Load a PPC release if you are on an Intel Mac?

If you cannot use the uninstaller (but latest version works on intel Macs, so it should uninstall nicely if you launch its uninstaller), just remove the ArcanaStartupSound in PreferencePanes folder and ArcanaStartupSound in StartupItems folder. It will take you just a minute...
You could have found this yourself looking at the document list (located in File menu) of the Installer, that shows you what will be installed.
Yes, annoying, but not so terrible...
