I bought my Studio TVR several years ago and it was fine running under Mac OS9. I have since bought a DV video camera so haven't needed the Formac but I recently decided to transfer all my analog tapes to a hard drive. First I couldn't get the new 3.6.2 software to launch kept getting error 01 (tried on my Mac G4, MacBook and iMac all running OS 10.5.5). Tried an external power supply but still didn't work. I then decided to try just in iMovie and was able to import several hours of video. The picture was fine and the audio was fine as I was importing, however when I tried to play back, there was a huge digital noise over the track. I traced this down to the video input. After some reading on the Formac site I see that I may need a firmware update but have no idea where or how to get this. I was previously registered but was unable to log in to the site. I have tried writing the company twice in the past week but have gotten no replies. After reading this thread I see I am not alone! It seems like a hopeless case and a huge waste of money since there appears to be NO support.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar product. I don't really want the TV part, I just want to do good quality transfers of my old video tapes.

They have a new trick to collect money: Under OS-X 10.4.8 the software-version 3.2 starts and ends with the demand to upgrade the TVR with a new flashrom. That is expensive, of course. And warranty will be given only when you let them change it.

Even in germany I can't get a phone connection to formac!

Shame on them. This is a company without any of the german ideals like good product quality or service orientation.

Has anyone a driverversion higher than 2.5 and less than 3.2?

Quoted from another user's review:
"... then download and install the latest version of Vidi, I have found Vidi works infinitely better the offical Formac software."
I think this should sufficiently emphasize the quality of their support ... never seen a company that wants to be paid for a simple firmware upgrade, also requiring its customers to send the product back to the factory for this ... and never seen so much negative feedbacks from angry customers.
It's a pity because, after all, the quality of their products is good ... but what do you do if you are a video professional and you can't get support for something you work with?

if this device is for people who want to import video directly into imovie or Final Cut Pro. It is not suppose to be a tv solution. Get el Gato for that. EL GATO cannot directly mport into imovie. This can.
Enough said

To those who have been having connection problems with the Formac Studio TVR.

Below are some general tips that probably have already been mentioned but I feel are worth reiterating.

Try plugging in the Formac Studio TVR to it's own FireWire port It seems that the Studio prefers not to be daisy chained with other devices.

If you have a lot of FireWire devices, even if they are plugged in to separate ports, especially devices such as iPods that don't have independent power supplies, the Formac Studio may not be getting adequate power. Formac sells a power brick for $39.

Also if you have a laptop, even if you don't have other devices plugged in, again the Formac studio may not be getting enough power through the FireWire bus.

Check to make sure you have the latest version of the Formac Studio TVR Firmware.

Make sure you have the newest version of Mac OS X and QuickTime you can.

Finally if you are still having problems do a search for everything related to Formac Studio on your computer and Vidi if you have it installed, remove everything. Downloa, Install, and setup the latest version of the offical Formac Studio software, and then download and install the latest version of Vidi, I have found Vidi works infinitely better the offical Formac software.

Following these tips I no longer have any issues using my Formac Studio on my PowerMac Dual 1.8GHz G5, running Mac OS 10.4.2, QuickTime 7.0.1, and Vidi 0.4.5.

Hope this helps.

I wish formac would go out of business. You can't even download their own software from their web site. I try and log in and they won't let me for the last few months. Nobody helps you. You got to get your credit card company involved if you want your money back.

Before installing Tiger all went well with Studio TVR (with driver 3.1 and earlier). With Tiger the application behaves erratically, most of the times won't show the TV window.

v 3.1 seems to be incompatible with Tiger and the standard Studio DV. The device is not seen by the system.

I am not sure why I purchaced this product. Nothing seems to work, even this driver made things worse. Even their tech support had no clue what my problem was. I am going to have to find anotherTV tuner device to use under OSX.

I too am really disappointed with this product. The software is very, very flaky at best on any machine I try and use it with (G4 iMac, G4 iBook, G5DT or G4 PowerBook). Tiger seems to have killed off the software altogether.

Formac should be ashamed at their lack of decent software support
