Searching through multiple disks for a specific file or folder is a headache that most Mac users have faced at one time or another. CatFinder is a utility that solves that problem and many more by maintaining catalogs of your disks on the local hard drive. By using CatFinder, you can quickly find which disk contains a desired file and even launch the file from within CatFinder.

CatFinder features an intuitive Finder-like interface for browsing the catalogs and provides powerful search and reporting features to help you find and organize your files. Below are just some of CatFinder's features:

What's New

Version 2.7 allows you to adjust the size of the two panes in the Find results window. This version will also automatically detect the disk type when cataloging a disk.

Still the best piece of shareware - EVER!

I've been using it since the early 1990s throughout its evolution and Keith Turner's application is invaluable and the ONLY one out there to have a Boolean-based search system.

Apple take note for OSX10.5 Leopard. It's what you should have been basing OSX10.4 Spotlight on from the very start.

Could do with another update for the Intel Macs and a few interface tweaks for the late noughties but still works really quickly and does the job beautifully.

Just a question I couldn't figure out from trying version 2.7: I can save the list of files on my drive, but it would be very helpful to open the list in a wordprocessor like MS Word so I can edit it.

Is there a way to do this, and if so, how?

Otherwise it looks great to use!

This looks like a great app, BUT (!). I have a question to the developer:

I'm a sound designer and I've got loads of sound files that I use to add comments to (using command + i). Now, I've been searching for a file utility that can actually show comments in a list view, so that I can sort the files by comments instead of their file names. To my knowledge there is no such app. My humble question is therefore, do you know why that is? It can't be a coincidence, that all developers have forgot to implement this function, right? In my OSX experience with commenting files, I've had some serious troubles with comments actually disappearing. Sometimes even when I simply play a .wav file in QuickTime, but the occasions varies. Is OSX commenting working correctly? I heard something about Unix having flaws in this matter.

Some tips or comments ;) on this would be very appreciated. Thanks though, for being so kind and making a fine free application!

CDFinder can have comments for catalogs, and even files and folders. You can enter them, sort them, and print and export them. And it reads audio file meta data, too...
