Latest update does same thing as
previous reviewer. When turning on
the "mail count" GmailStatus
disappears from the menu
bar. It is there technically
just hidden from view.
Also had problems with signing
into my account even though I am
using the correct password and
user name (I checked and confirmed)
I updated to new GmailStatus version, but didn't work for me.... no numbers for "unread messages", could not set color preferences.. nothing. The application was there, but invisible.. I'm testing now Google Notifier. It stands beautifully in my tool bar and I can read from there the senders of my unread mail! Wow!
Been a happy user of GmailStatus for a long time now, I like the benefit of not having to have Mail.app open all the time personally (plus I keep the Dock hidden by default, so a glance upwards to check if there's anything in my inbox has always been a easier way to do things).
Since updating to this latest version (1.0.7) it has ceased functioning, showing '0' all the time, even though opening Mail shows several unread messages. I hope this problem can be corrected soon otherwise the program is (for me) currently useless unfortunately.
I have no interest in downloading my web mail, so if it's not pulled in to Mail.app, then Mail.app is of no help to me. GCount and GmailStatus are thus both very handy.

I have no idea why they use it either...
All my friends use it, was wondering what it was about.

The original poster in this thread can't figure out why having more than one email account/address could be useful. That in itself is dumbfounding to me.
And more importantly by using any gmail notifier (either this one or original Gmail Notifier) we don't need to keep Mail application running all the time consuming resources.
Unless you have a .mac account, when you use Mail.app, the sent mails are stored on your computer. Using gmail with online compose windows store the sent mails on your online account, so they'll be available everywhere you check them. For me it's more than useful.

I feel this is a step backwards from gmail notifier. With gmail notifier one could run two versions simultaneously for two different accounts (no need to fast user switch etc). With GmailStatus running two copies w/ different names takes me to the same inbox for the first account. Graphics for this are much better though.

Developer is really on top of it - now second version posted today (1.06) works and menu items take you directly where you want.
Thanks

I was mad when I found this morning that GmailStatus no longer works. I found that Google released Mac version of Gmail Notifier and got it. Then newer version of GmailStatus was posted later today. It checks mail, notifies, has expanded menu, but it doesn't take me directly to Inbox or Labels or Compose page - instead it takes you only to Gmail login page, regardless what you select from menu.
Seems developer missed something...

I used GmailStatus with no problems for many months, but since upgrading to Tiger (most noticeably since applying the 10.4.2 update), it's been too flaky to use. It unexpectedly quits often, and sometimes it start using all my CPU time for no discernible reason and needs to be force-quit from Activity Monitor.
I've since started using Gee (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17195) instead. No problems with it so far.
This program served me well in Panther, but it seems like it's in desperate need of an update for Tiger compatibility.

I also tried completely deleting the program and associated plist file then reinstalling but it still doesn't work.
