Oolite is a space sim game, written for Mac OS X in Objective C using Cocoa and OpenGL.

It was written as my response to the withdrawal of Elite - The New Kind from the internet. Although inspired by the work of Christian Pinder, following David Braben and Ian Bell, the work is an independent interpretation and expansion of the original game.

Oolite is designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be modified using simple, free graphics packages and text-editors.
What's New
Version 1.75.3:
  • Subentities are now set up correctly when buying a new ship.
  • Ships now take subentities into account when deciding whether they can dock.
  • Fixed ghost wormholes. Wormholes can no longer have a jump range of zero.
  • The fuel indicator is now drawn correctly in interstellar space.
  • Additional guards against out-of-range targets for the player.
  • Sounds now stop playing when starting a new game. (Bug #18108)
  • [Mac] Growl display support is disabled due to upcoming changes to Growl.
  • Ships with sun skimmer AI in interstellar space no longer cause errors in the log, and AIs can handle the situation by responding to NO_SUN_FOUND.
  • "sunskim-trader" added to default pirate victim roles.
  • interstellar_undocking now works when in interstellar space 0 LY from a system.
  • HUD changes are now deferred, so changing HUDs during HUD drawing is safe.
  • The debugging function callObjC() has been disabled.

Amazing rendition of the 80s space opera Elite. I've been playing it for about 3 months now and am blown away by not only rediscovering Elite's gameplay but seeing how Oolite manages to improve on it. The game being almost completely scriptable allows the surprisingly large community around Oolite to extend it with superb graphics, engaging missions, believable environments and even fan fiction to engulf the player, all of that free to download and discover!

I played this game on an Acorn electron years ago. it's always been one of my favourites and is still a great game. Thanks for making this version for the Mac and keep up the good work. Haven't had it crash once on me yet, always works fine. :)

This game is very buggy. It unexpectedly quits every ten minutes or so. Why anyone would put so much effort into a ripoff game that has that many bugs, I don't know.

Please submit bug reports to me oolite@aegidian.org and say which OS you are running.

I do my best to nail bugs as they are reported, at the expense of sleep and a family life.

how are you being ripped off, the game is free. don't be mean, don't be unhelpful-- say what is happening exactly and/or give a real review.

This gets more and more awesome. By now it must have improved on every aspect of Elite, and although that must be 20 years ago it had a special magic that's unspoiled in Oolite. v1.35 has taken it to a new level with the shipyard and cargo deals, and this is going to keep me awake for a long time. As a space fan, I think this may be the best game on Mac.

I remember playing a spectrum version of this game. I'm sure it was more engaging...how can that be? Is it reallt necessary for the 20 minute run up to the stations? I can understand having a slow buildup but this is stupid! Straight into the trash with it.

Space is big. Another Best Game Ever takes ages to drive between Los Santos and Las Venturas. Even flying using airports takes a few minutes of doing nothing. Would you put San Andreas in the trash, too?
