Silver Sombrero is a wicked-awesome program to randomly produce pairings for an Ultimate Frisbee tournament. The idea is based on the traditional "hat tournament," where everyone who shows up is randomly assigned onto a team in the beginning. Silver Sombrero goes a step beyond by assigning new teams at the beginning of every round. At the end of the day, all players will have individual win/loss records, with the elite players rising to the top.

What's New

Version 1.3b:

Changed minimum player limit to 8, since a one-game tournament is kind of lame. Rounds 4 and 5 will now divide up top-ranked players evenly among teams, both to even out skill levels and to minimize the number of undefeated players at the end. Blank player names will be rejected, as will names over 20 characters long. Fixed rankings columns to line up properly.

This isn't an entry for a software package per se, but an ad for a kind of tournament set-up. Which wouldn't be a bad thing if the scoring app was well done, but it's not.

It's a basic console app with no GUI to speak of. This would be understandable if it was a command-line tool, but it's actually a SIOUX-type executable. (It can't be integrated easily into the rest of the UNIX subsystem.) You have to keep the program running during the course of a tourney, since it doesn't support saving of match pairings and scores. It must all be done in one protracted session; it might be inconvenient for a referee to keep a laptop powered up while he/she is watching over games as they are played.

Finally, the wording of the prompts are very unprofessional. When a program asks me about "big burly mens" and "fine sexy ladies," I'm not sure of the maturity of the person who wrote this app. It only serves to reinforce the "dumb jock" stereotype.

The idea of offering a scoring/referee application to encourage adoption of athletic tournaments is a good one, but the execution of the ideal in this case is bad. This looks more like a private in-house tool than something for mass consumption. Keep trying!

Wow, this review must've taken as long to write as the program. But the comments are all pretty much correct, it's absolutely designed for personal use and has virtually no polish or features. I've never seen anything similar, so I thought someone might find it useful. Apparently the program is so shamefully bad I shouldn't have bothered...

I didn't intend the review to be that harsh. It's just that this is the wrong venue for an in-house tool of this nature. If you posted the link to your web site on an atheletics web site or user forum, you would have gotten better feedback, or even got offers of assistance to help polish up the program.
