DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. DOSBox has already been ported to many different platforms, such as Windows, BeOS, Linux, Mac OS X.
DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games.
You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer.
What's New
Version 0.74:
Several small game specific fixes/hacks/support. (Offensive,
Roadhog, GTA installer, Kingdom O' Magic soundcard detection,
Pirate booter, Armored Fist installer)
Add the S3-specific 640x480 256 color mode. (fixes regression in "Wooden
Ships and Iron Men" and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream")
Fix a stack overflow that could crash DOSBox.
Add fake microphone input. (fixes Talking Parrot)
Modify adlib turn off code, so that it doesn't turn off in
cases where the same sound is repeated over and over again.
Several small fixes to the CDROM audio code. (HOMM2, Redneck
Rampage and others)
Several improvements to the CDROM emulation code. (fixes Alpha
Storm and GT Racing 97)
Several fixes to the batch file handling. (Shift and
use the typed first %0 instead of the parsed %0)
Improve file redirection and redirected line ends. (fixes
Phantasmagoria 2 DOS installer)
Fix compilation with new MAC os X version.
Add 16C550A FIFO support to the serial port emulation.
Improve modem emulation to get higher speeds.
Change default samplerates to 44100, blocksize to 1024 and prebuffer to 20,
so that hopefully certain soundcards produce more fluent sound playback.
Add some rarely used, but for some games critical flags to
the internal commands.
Add -userconf flag, so that the userspecific configuration can
easily be used together with -conf configfile.
Improve internal timing with repeating timers (especially with
the dynamic core).

It seems to totally ignore any changes I make to the default DOSBox.Prefs file and doesn't recognise the 'conf' command when I try to remind the app where the config file is located.
After setting the frame skipping to 1 and increasing the CPU cycles I managed to run Command & Conquer at a reasonable speed on a Mac Mini 1.4ghz with 512mb RAM.

Amazingly promising. Runs Ultima Underworld without a hitch. Only problems with hooking it up with more conventional memory, so can't play the sequel

Works fine except for the characters. This just won't be the same as the keyboard. Example, when I type ":", it shows a ">". How can I solve that?

such a fantastic application, I really hope there will be an update with saves or macros...? so I don't have to keep mounting the same folder!

It is fantastic and yet terribly slow.
How do I turn off sound? I've got a powerbook G4 and the sound here is worse than my Apple IIc.
I wish more info came with this program...
I hope there'll be an update...
I hope there'll be at least one menu option in the updated version...
Would be nice also, if you could click out of this window without having to cmd-tab all the time...(small thing)

I tried to run the programme by double-click on the application. But nothing happens. I've got 10.3.6 and a Pismo G3 500MHz.

I have radnor and the sdl library installed. I have never really used dos, so I cannot figure out how to mount a cdrom rom. Any help? The dosbox website isnt very helpful.

OK, I didn't realize at first that I needed Radnor to run on top of this: with it, I'm able to run my favorite DOS games after all...and they run on my 1GHz Emac with 750 megs of RAM with no noticeable slowdown in speed (they have motion and sound, but aren't FPS games, so speed isn't as critical). One of these games isn't the most stable going, but it ran with no glitches. I'm really pleased!
