AudioSlicer is a Cocoa GUI application that finds all silences in an audio file and allows you to split it into several smaller audio files and to name/tag them properly. For now only MP3 is supported but other audio formats may be added in the future. While most other tools doing this split automatically according to certain criteria, AudioSlicer shows you all silences within a certain range of duration. You can then listen to the silence - well, to the audio before and after the silence really - and then you decide if you want to split there. The splitting is done without loss, there is no decoding

It's rare to find a program this well designed and useful, and rarer still to find one for free.

My only two criticisms are these:

1) Opening non-mp3s would be useful, although one can always convert to mp3 first; it's just a matter of convenience.

2) It would be extremely handy to be able to join multiple mp3s and then split them along different lines.

Other than that, I have no complaints.

I used this app for 6 months under OSX 10.2, finding it pretty good for splitting off-the-air recordings I had made. It is a little twitchy with the silence level setting, but once you get it right it works well. Then I changed to OSX 10.4 and it just started acting strange. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it just crashes when trying to write the splitted files. It is too unstable for me to use at this time--please fix it!

Easy to use and it works - straight forward
no problems in use - and no problems with results.

I did not rate it for features - it has (for me) only one feature I sought and that was to "slice" mp3 files. More than that it may have - but it is quite good at what it does. No slight intended.

Great tool! It took a few minutes to get going due to the lack of documentation, but once I figured it out, it made this task very easy. Much better for slicing up audio than Audacity, even though Audacity does a lot more overall.

Creat little app... It's ability to split files without encoding allows lossless editing of complete albums. Thanks to the developers for this great time saver.

Don't waste your time if you're running Mac OS X 10.4.6. It crashes every time just after "finding silences"--I tested this both on my new Intel Mac and my PPC Mac, with various MP3 files.

This app sounds really cool though--I hope the developer comes back and figures out what's causing this.
