XeTeX is designed to provide a tool particularly suited to formatting long, structured documents, and supporting multilingual typesetting and complex non-Roman scripts.

It merges the TeX typesetting system developed by Donald E. Knuth with the Unicode rendering capabilities of ATSUI and AAT fonts on Mac OS X. This means that it can be used to typeset complex scripts just as readily as English, by simply specifying an appropriate AAT or OpenType font from among those installed in OS X; no complex font installation or configuration is needed.

This is one fantastic programme. It is the first programme available on Macintosh that does sophisticated desktop publishing for any AAT-font. Adobe has proprietary methods for handling complex scripts. I recommend http://www.xenotypetech.com for some of the more obscure AAT-enabled fonts.

One extra nice addition is that this programme corrects for Apple's pesky TextEdit insertion bug so the PDF output looks great in that regard.

I particularly like immediate production of PDF files from XeTeX.

Microsoft Windows addicts could go for UltraXML to get somewhat similar power (not TeX-based). But at about US$4,400 per license for UltraXML...why not just buy some Macintoshes and use XeTeX!

The only minus is the lack of a real GUI...a wide problem with TeX-based applications.

My grievance with LaTeX has always been the difficulties of installing fonts other than the basic ones and the cumbersome support of utf8. Well XeTeX promises to solve these problems and add support of OpenType Pro fonts as well! It still isn't compatible with all .sty files but it's only version 0.8 and new versions are frequent.

Priceless, if you wish to typeset chinese, japanese etc and combine more languages. Much easier than Omega and all the perfect font from MacOS X ...

Only the author could include some XeLaTeX examples, not just plain XeTeX.

Great application, does what it says, ending with neat and clean files. You should save the read me file during the installation and follow the instructions carefully (TexShop saving default is mac roman and this needs to be changed). Jonathan, who responds and helps at no time, deserves 5 stars too.

I would love to try the XeTeX, however I am unable to install it. After authenticating it writes "preparing to install on ..." and then "there was a problem ... try again". So, I tried, and then restarted the MAC and re-tried, reloaded the package ... gave it about 7 different attempts, to no avail. Love to hear any suggestions ???

Anonymous, I'm sorry you weren't able to install the program; if you'll contact me (see the ReadMe), I'll be happy to try and troubleshoot. I've been trying to make the installation procedure more robust, so you may find that a newer release, or the i-Installer package, will be able to install correctly.

I am also getting the same "There was a problem installing" error message. I've downloaded the file twice and the checksum is the same in both cases, so it isn't a corrupted archive (as far as I can tell).

When the installer reports that there was a problem, try looking in the log (File/Show Log), and select "Show Everything". That will display the terminal output of the installer scripts, and may give a clue as to why it is failing.

If you'd like to share your experiences on the XeTeX mailing list (see link on the home page), you may be able to get help from others there in resolving the problems; also, once we understand why it is failing for you, it may be possible to improve the installer in future.
