Universal Ticker displays a scrolling ticker - either in the menubar or in a floating window. The actual content is provided by plug-ins, third party applications or by yourself using the AppleScript interface.
These plug-ins are included:
RSS - RSS and Atom feeds
Time - time and date
iTunes - current iTunes track
Battery - battery status
Birthdays - birthdays from your address book
Mail - count of unread mail in Mail.app
Text - lines from any text file
What's New
Version 2.1.1:
Bugfix: Status Item did not show up
Universal Binary
Sparkle software update
use arbitrary gradients as background
RSS plugin uses system library (that includes Atom support)
Note: Keys for Tigger will continue to work with this version.
Requirements
PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Try to increase your update frequency. I have a Dual 1.25 G4 and get smooth scrolling at 40 Hz while the scrolling speed is set to 80 pt/s.
Please also note that right after startup most plug-ins will need to do some setup tasks. The Smiley Ticker will load it's images, News Ticker loads the feeds etc.

I just installed this app onto a dual 2 G5 and the ticker still doesn't scroll smoothly. It jitters quite a bit. Must be something else other than the CPU speed causing this.
But scrolling is the way the content updates. Please suggest what should happen when a number of plug-ins want to show different values at the same time while the display is supposed to stand still.

Please allow users to set the scroll speed to zero so that the content doesn't scroll at all.
I don't know what you mean by "too slow". The scrolling speed is configurable and is not bound by your machine's processing power.
You might get a jerky scrolling ticker if your Mac is too slow, though.
As for CPU usage - I know it takes a lot. I just haven't found a way to make it use less. But the app renices itself so it won't take power away from other, more important apps.

Can we make this a news ticker?? haven't a good news ticker for the mac at all.
This is pretty neat, but give the thing a contextual menu (control-click) with options like Preferences, Quit, disabling a plugin right from there, etc, and make it less of a proc hog.
