I have written this program because my scanner is useless in OS X thanks to UMAX. Thankfully, the people working on SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) have come up with drivers for my scanner. However, I have to use the terminal to use it.
So, I have written a program to scan without all the hassle of terminal! It is very basic but does the job.
Before using my program, you need to download the libraries. Mattias Ellert has compiled sets for OS X and packaged them up. You can get them here. You need to download the binary file for SANE, and if your scanner is USB, the binary of libusb.
What's New
Version 1.2b:
Direct access to the SANE library (better multiple scanner support, scanner detection)
Preferences (you can choose what to do after a scan)
Removed Settings window (buggy)
Added Settings drawer (less settings, less buggy)
Added a nice icon near the scanner name in the scanner list (nice!)
Lots of bug fixing, we have changed almost everything under the surface
Please note this is a beta release. The reason we are doing this is to fix any bugs that might come up. Please post any bugs found to the support forum.

Requirements
PPC, Mac OS X 10.1 or later, A SANE supported scanner.
Well, looks like the server for this SANE front-end is as dead as the TWAIN SANE author's.

"you can get them here" not.

I found this does not work on my computer (500MHz G3 iMac running 10.1.5). The frontend correctly identifies my scanner via SANE. (It's a Mustek 1200UB.)
However, what I get after it opens the scanner is a window that says:
"Press the 'Scan new image' button to scan. but there are no buttons to press nor any other kind of visible controls.

Has a poor GUI, no option, you are forced to fill your system with
1) libusb.pkg
2) sane-backends.pkg
3) gettext.pkg
to get SANE running.
OK, works well with my Canon FB630U, but VueScans ugly interface seems to be better than the NON-GUI of SANE. Sorry to say that.

My Umax Astra 3450 is supported bt the Vuescan program.
This program is buggy, with a not very good GUI, and doesn't have the options that vuescan offer.

VueScan's Supported Scanners list says:
"Unsupported: All UMAX USB models except 3400 (some versions), 5400 and PowerLook 180."
Lucky you.

It works and it's free. More GUI options would be nice. VueScan doesn't support Umax Astras in USB, so for me the SANE scanner frontend is a reasonable choice.

Looks promising, but the Umax Astra 4000U seems to stay an OS X cadaver...

So is my Astra 4700 :(
Will it ever besupported? (I's even missing in the unsupported-list)

Um...no, anonymous. VueScan does NOT support every scanner, and it never will.

Just buy VueScan, it's a lot easier and works with every scanner.

Oh no it doesn't. Many of Umax's "USB" scanners are parallel-port scanners with a built-in USB adaptor, and certainly do not work with VueScan. Would that they did. Please note that this is all to do with Umax, and nothing the developer of VueScan can help, so he is not to blame.
