I can't speak to the quality of the app, but there is a place for this- many corporate environments block access to iChat, and you don't necessarily want the overhead of an IM app for this basic functionality.
I understand this app is in the very beginning stages of development and not all of the features are nearly complete, but I wouldn't be creating an application like this. Especially when you can use iChat for free using Rendevous technology, and it works with the AIM network.
