I thought it was worth repeating that as of 0.98.3 aMSN does not have A/V chat capabilities.
According to the developers, this is a temporary state of affairs.
It happened mainly because Microsoft (yet again) changed the way the A/V chat protocols work, and now the aMSN developers have to catch up.
Unfortunately, this also means that you won't be able to use an older version of aMSN to do A/V chat, because it won't work with the changes Microsoft has made.
it was the only messenger for me that would not lag out...
I can now close it with "quitting" when i hit the "X" which is awesome i dont have to minimize anymore. It now has voice call!!! its faster and the sounds are quite unique
Yes i understand your point.. but some people are just that lazy or are so organized that they really only want one client that does all. More people use MSN and aim then skype, but i completely agree with you.
I dont understand why they cannot get video support in microsoft messenger... its starting to annoy me :@
Well, reading all those bad reviews, I must say that if you use aMSN as a simple messenger (no video), it's more enjoyable than the original MSN.
But I wonder why bother having trouble with video functions on anything using msn network when Skype works so great on any platform?
The perfect solution I've chosen long ago and that I install for friends asking me: Use aMSN for messaging and Skype for video, it's so easy!
This second beta of incoming 0.98 dramatically increase the responsiveness of the application (I'm on a G5 iMac with OS X 10.5.3).
Still there's one systematic bug, but with a work-around. At the first connection after launching the application I get an error message, I click on "Ignore" then the program goes on but the connection to MSN doesn't establish. The work-around is: quit aMSN and relaunch it again. The connection this time works. This is the reason for my very personal rating 3 stars on stability.
Very good is the capability to access the personal MSN Spaces contents directly from the contact list. Still missing the audio, but for the rest this beta release finally rocks although it's not yet native Cocoa.
why do not use Mercury Messenger? I think it is better than aMSN. You can use camera in Mercury. And also you can record it at the same time. International languages support.
aMSN has gone downhill! It seems the latest version is considerably less stable than the last time I tried it a year ago! It crashes whenever you select the Help menu item (done by accident sometimes) is sluggish isn't sending authorisation notifications when adding a contact. It's clearly a bad port of a PC program, which is disappointing because it's the only option for video chat with MSN contacts on the Mac at present.
With regards to aMSN being the 'only' IM that supports webcam with msn users, there is another: Mercury Messenger( v1.9). I've had the same problems as the above with aMSN and so I'm using mercury for the moment while waiting for aMSN to put things right.
One point with Mercury - the webcam (isight) tended to crash occasionally. Go to Options, global settings, webcam settings and then lower the 'send interval' figure.
Hope this helps.
It's really a shame that so many people (yeah, mostly Windows users) are so focussed on MSN as their primary IM and thus force so many others to use it as well...!
While this app is generally better (albeit uglier) and has more features than the original client from M$ it still has lots of problems...! First of all for some reason it takes like forever to launch...!? Then it places that stupid downloads folder on my Desktop, even though I have changed that setting in the prefs countless times...aaargh...!
The (German) localization has several errors, the GUI gets messed up occasionally, video -- although it generally works -- seems to bring down the app occasionally and the whole thing has crashed on me numerous times...
Unfortunately the ones of us who happen to have friends, colleagues and family who don't know better will have to put up with all this, since there are real alternatives around...and as long as there are several major IM systems out there, there will always be need for a good multimessenger that covers it all...! But that will probably always stay wishful thinking...
(Don't start with Adium or the resurrected Proteus now, or the few options that iChat has in that area -- non of that really covers it as good as is necessary...)
I just downloaded 0.97rc1, onto my 30GB 14" iBook with Mac OS 10.3.9.
I can't open the disk image, i keep getting a message saying it is corrupt.
I don't have a huge download limit so i'm pretty annoyed >=(
Dear all, I have just added this to my mac, BUT can not get my isight work, I can see the other person's video but no voice, they can not see me nor can hear my voice, is there anybody who can help me get this thing going,
thanks a lot

I downloaded v0.98 and it seems to be more stable, it hasnt crashed at all on me yet, you can find it on the website.
the main reason that I use it is because it is the only version of msn messenger that supports video.
its not the best msn messenger for mac but it is the only one that supports video.

This is the message I get while mounting.

It uses the CPU a lot before crashing. Sometimes, seems random, it doesn't crash and keeps running. Unfortunately it seems very unstable :(
Adium for now...
Why?
