Scisoft for Mac OS X is modeled after the ESO Scisoft project but is not an official Scisoft release and is neither associated with ESO, STScI, nor NOAO. I thought I should write this to clear up exactly what this software is and who it is aimed at....
This is PROFESSIONAL astronmy software, a collection of commonly used data reduction/manuipulation suites all packaged into one installer. This software is not aimed at the casual user, there's little/no GUI for most tasks and no, there aren't any 'icons' to click to get this running.
In my opinion (as a full-time astronomer) this port of the ESO scisoft suite is excellent news for those astronmers using the Mac OS. Without this installer the installation of all of this software would take hours or even days, with this I was up and running in about 10 minutes.
THE GOOD: It's feature packed, i.e. pretty much every bit of software I could ever ask for.
Easy to use - the packages install into /scisoft so if's self contained and easily deleted (no IRAF user to create either!) Only slight issue may arise if you use BASH and not TCSH when running IRAF but then you are warned.
Value - it's free!
Stability - no problems
Overall a huge thumbs up and a big thank you to the developers.
