GarageBand Anywhere allows you to put GarageBand on any drive. If you haven't yet installed GarageBand, it can be freshly installed on the drive of your choice. If GarageBand is already installed, it can be moved directly to the desired location.

GarageBand Anywhere will work with any OS X Volume. (From an iPod to a Firewire drive to a RAID array)

WARNING!

This program works as detailed, however, it is important to understand HOW this program works.

This program moves your GarageBand files onto an external device, and creates system owned symbolic links in the files' place (which point to your external media)

THESE SYMBOLIC LINKS CAN CAUSE INSTALLERS TO CRASH. I had a problem with GarageBand, and had to reinstall, and continually go the error "The install media is invalid." blah blah blah.

I thought my disk was scratched. It wasn't.

Once I removed (deleted) ALL of the symbolic links on my hard-drive that GarageBand Anywhere created, THEN things started working again properly.

So, this program works great, just be careful.

Tried to move my Garageband2 to my second drive for media and was in process of moving it when after 15-20 minutes states "Am I out of space on the drive ?" Now I donnot have all my loops available to my Logic Express 7.0.1,Garageband2 works still though. How do I fix this ? Re-install Logic Express and all the many loops I have accumulated ? There must be an easier way ?

Sorry my mistake,I used the 4.0 version on Garageband 2,that's why it did not work and when I re-did with version 5.0.1 it worked fine and seems like the loops are back with Logic Express also.

For those who haven't read much, like myself, to install the Jam Packs in addition, once the move is complete, just tell the Installer to install on the primary drive and the loops will be installed on your remote automatically. The Alias tricks the Installer, as explained by David.

One minor note, the Demo Songs of JP4 did install in the /Users/Shared directory. I don't really care much for demo songs and have since moved the 1.78GB of songs to the remote drive. Finder will ask you for the Admin pass if you wish to do this. I see no reason for the demos to be in a shared directory. I don't believe these songs are accessible via GB unless you specifically open them.

I tried this to move GB to an external drive. At the end of the lengthy process it told me that there were errors and I can quit/continue. When I got out of the app I had none working GB installation. What is worse - is that now I can't even reinstall GarageBand from the original DVD as the original Apple Installer starts writing files and after 1% says that I should try again... :-( Since I don't feel like taking the Windows way and reinstall the system - the effect is that now on my machine there is no GarageBand at all after trying this nice, little app..

I got GB installed back. It took me some time to depack and check the locations of the files in all the GB packages but I was able to hunt down all the invalid links left by the app. After removing all of them I was able to reinstall GB from the original DVD.

Can you give us a few details about what happens if you try to open a project and your firewire disk is still in your bag, etc? How will GB cope? Also, what's GBA do? Alias? Soft-link? Path alteration in the prefs file? A combination? I suspect it's just a prefs file thing, as this tool is a replacement installer. Hm. Interesting way of doing it.

Great idea but is does not work well.

Plus it does not work with images (dmg). I like to use images on another partition to install an application without messing with CDs and DVDs.

Hi!
I've installed this software to use it with I Life 05. But when I try to install Garageband ond my external HD, GarageBand Anywhere tells me "Please insert the disk I Life 05 and try again". The DVD IS inserted in the DVD reader. So, what could be the problem?
I have Mac OS X 10.4.11.

See my comment about the need to remove the Symbolic Links this program creates. That should fix your problem.

I am a MAC TECH and know almost every trick for troubleshooting but i am stuck. I'm running OSX 10.4.9 on a macbook intel duo and used this great product to move GB sounds and it worked great but i then tried to instal logic 7.2 and it keeps giving me errors that i cant install. thought it was the disks but i successfully installed it o on 7 diferent machines. Made images and nothing. short of wipig my HD, i've tried everything.disk utils,cash out. any suggestions?

The iLife '06 installer seems to allow installation on external drives (I'm doing it as I type this). Click Customise then click on the location of each GarageBank element and choose an external drive location.

I tried to move GB 1.0.1 to my external Lacie HD with your nice app. But if I start GB now it first says something like "error (null)". After trying to fix it GB "can't find soundlibary". But all soundfiles are on the right place (I think). What is wrong? And does it work better with GB 2.0?
