I can confirm that Nikon Scan doesn't work on Leopard. The application starts but the scanner isn't recognised. Hence one doesn't get the window where you're supposed to launch the scan. I will also add that, ever since the beginning, I have had many problems with this software, even on a Power PC. In conclusion, Nikon is far from being Mac friendly. If you can, just avoid it.

Nikon Scan 4 is incompatible with OS X 10.5 on either PowerPC or Intel platforms. For most users it just crashes or hangs up. I got it to stop crashing by uninstalling and reinstalling, but it locks up the computer while in use (USB input devices stop responding) and on my CoolScan 5000 is takes something like 30 minutes to scan a slide at my usual settings.

If you don't currently have a Nikon scanner, I would recommend against getting one unless/until Nikon starts supporting OS X again. If you already have one and you can't return it, look for VueScan or SilverFast.

I can only give this the worst rating -- even though I think some of the features are better than the third party software, I can't use them now so it doesn't really matter.

I see that this is PowerPC only and hasn't been updated since mid-2004...

How well does this work with Intel Macs? I'm thinking of buying a Nikon CoolScan V ED File Scanner, but am hesitating because of this driver/support question.

DARYLF2 asked...
"How well does this work with Intel Macs?"

It's kind of crashy on an Intel Mac. With a Coolscan 5000ED and SF-210 slide feeder it crashes occasionally, but not always, when a slide jams. It also seems to crash intermittently. It's too bad, too, because I really like the Nikon Scan software.

I would really love it if they came out with a newer, faster Coolscan VI/6000 and a Universal app update for Nikon Scan. Maybe give us 5000 dpi while they're at it.

I have a G5 Mac and can't seem to get my CoolScan 8000 to keep from crashing when I do previews. When I attempt to change any settings and rescan, it crashes. I'm running 10.3.3 on the G5 1.8 single processor machine. I have tried it with PhotoShop CS and as a stand alone, no difference. Re-installing the software and repairing permissions had no effect.

I'have got the same problem with the preview, it crashes very often, and I don't understant why?... No Pb with vuescan ( it's incredibly faster but the colors and the colors controls are Impossible to deal with for a professional use)

Coolscan V ED + Dual 1,8 (first version with pci-x slots) 1024 Mo Panther version 10.3.7

After having uninstalled and reinstalled Nikon SCAN 4 and update endless times to no avail, software still crashes on Mac OS 10.3.9 each time adjustments made and asked to scan, NIKON now suggests there is a version 4.0.1 out there that may do the trick, but I have only found Version 4 and its update 2. Anyone with similar problems and prehaps a solution, since NIKON seems to think they do not anyone any solutions.

Using coolscan ED V, on either ibook G3 or Powermac G4, both have adequate memory.
When using ROC and GEM functions on either, Nikon Scan crashes at preview level.

My ED V is under guarantee has been back to Nikon workshop, they changed the mother card, to no effect problem persists.

Ideas ?

Thank you

works perfectly good with Coolscan LS IV and Panther.
directly installed 4.0.1 and tested it for a weekend-lot's of scans - I had no more crashes as in the 3.1.4 version.
Got very good Quality same like with Silverfast 5.5 Scans in OS 9 and digital ICE/ROC and GEM do a very good job with old positives and negatives Film.
but Digital DEE is only feature for the new scanners - LS V/LS 5000/LS 9000
this is best job in scan SW Nikon ever done since I've got my LS IV - Interface is now nearly OSX-like.
and best of it - it's stable.

Not all systems running Panther appear to work with Nikon Scan 4.0 or 3.1.4. Several users, myself included, have not been able to recognize their Nikon scanner since upgrading to Panther, even though Apple's System Profiler recognizes it. Nikon apparently acknowledges a Panther incompatibility. For more info, see recent posts at the MacInTouch web site (www.macintouch.com).

NikonScan 4.02 refuses to open scans done using NikonScan 3.14 software - 'serious error' comes that there is a profile mismatch - and changing profiles does not help. Any solutions?
