What's New
Version 12.0.4:

Enables specially designed apps on tablets, smartphones, and PCs to communicate with and control interaction with Photoshop CS5 (Located in the File menu: Remote Connections). Now you can be creative on other devices and instantly incorporate what you create into Photoshop. You must install the 12.0.4 update to activate a remote connection between Photoshop CS5 and any apps that Adobe or third-party developers create to interact with Photoshop. For example, Photoshop CS5 must be updated to 12.0.4 to interact with three new iPad apps that Adobe has designed to work with it - Adobe Nav, Adobe Color Lava, and Adobe Eazel. Available on the App Store.

The 12.0.4 update also fixes liquify performance, type related crashes, and other top customer issues. The most significant fixes include the following:

  • Liquify save mesh now works as expected.
  • An issue with Sharpen crashing has been fixed.
  • An issue with Quick Selection crashing has been fixed.
  • The Orphea Studio File Info issue has been resolved.

Adobe's new annual release model is a real turn off. Having to pay each year for a version that is 0.5 newer is a real pain and the subscriptions don't really make it that much better.

Once again Adobe does Microsoft... I buy the upgrade, install the upgrade, then use Adobe's CS4 "uninstall" app and it trashes my system and CS5... classic bumbling. And they wonder why people are flocking to Apple even with its hiccups...

Love Photoshop, rely on it for my personal life and work!

Free software like GIMP don't live up to the match especially with it running X11.

CS5 with content aware made my life even easier as I used to have to use the healing brush.

It's a shame to see that Photoshop didn't really get updated with CS5.5 but I have high hopes for CS6!

Hmm... Macupdate? Photoshop has been up to 12.1 (aka CS5.1) for a long time now.

The masking options are the best ever seen.
Worth the high asking price

Well the power is certainly there, but the user interface just sucks, and the pricing is ridiculous.

actually, for this type of application, i think it has the best user interface. who wants to keep dragging floating palettes away from your working photo all the time, specially when you zoom in and you can't access some photo areas with the scrollbars because they get hidden by palettes and bars?

Just _so_ much more impressive than CS4. (8^/

Works slightly more logically with "Spaces", but has generally caused quirks right round the system. Loads quicker but causes unusual bursts of CPU activity, and some operations (Noise reduction is one that comes to mind) work more slowly. In fact, I'm getting longer pauses and less snappy reaction in many places. Long thought the interface could use some reworking.

For the first time ever, in the "Save for Web" preview/optimization screen I see tearing when dragging the image around. Tried all 3 OpenGL settings, of which "Normal" gave the best results, but even with "Vertical Sync" on, tearing is readily visible as if it doesn't apply there. This is _with_ the best non-ridiculously priced graphics card for my Mac Pro 1,1: the NVidia 8800 GT.

When some features became "Optional Installs" under CS4 I was perplexed and annoyed. Now, of course, those are mostly unusable except in 32bit mode.

I'm still in early exploration stage. Perhaps I'll write a real review once everything shakes out.

For now, my reaction is "meh". Same for Adobe's general direction over the past several years, prior to which I thought they were gods.

Adobe is in major need of a shake down. Too many renegade developers within the Adobe firm pulling in different directions. They took a GREAT creative suite and made it a complete mess. The install process is aweful, especially for enterprise. So much time, effort and money is spent compensating for incompetence on the Adobe development side that third party solutions are becoming more and more viable. Google for these:

Pixelmator
VectorDesigner
PDFopenPro

Adobe has a bullseye painted on their back. The only thing that will save them is a *massive* restructuring and restaffing on the development side. Once Adobe gets back to adhering to the Apple Software Delivery guidelines, they might just start to turn that huge ship so it's heading in the right direction again.

Someone at Adobe has been sleeping at the wheel. Too many renegades in the firm tearing things apart. The whole "one code set across platforms" idea was a very bad idea. Adobe are starting to realize it.

Maybe CS6 will be written properly...with resources put into *correct* locations...with *proper* Apple pkg/mpkg installers...maybe not...

I think they are some tiny things that need to be polished in a 12.0.1 style update, but overall this version launches in a fraction of the time of previous versions. I also really like the workspaces feature which allows me to have different tool arrangements based on my task at hand (ex. GIF work for a web site vs. Photo retouching). I did not upgrade, I uninstalled and started fresh.

Is anyone going to review the program at all, or is everyone just going to complain about the update process? Nobody is forcing you to upgrade and I don't think your world will explode and you'll be incapable of performing high end activities without upgrading. I used to have the mindset that I always need the latest and greatest or my OCD will make my brain explode... but honestly if the program(s) you have now is/are doing exactly what you need to, there's no reason to upgrade in the first place.

Leo Spill had trouble on 01 May 2010
I am currently in the UK.
It's an old story I know... But Adobe is still taking the piss
that a product ( PS Upgrade ) sells for $199 US dollars
( Which is £130 UK Pounds )
sells in the UK for £189 pounds ( $288 US Dollars )

I know all the stuff about writing languages conversions
and different taxes etc, etc...
But when it comes down to it - it just stinks.
