NewsFan is the RSS Web news aggregator for Mac OS X. The MacUpdate RSS feed for new Mac OS X software releases is available here.
Terrible Developer! Outmoded in Every Way! Crashes all the time. Developer doesn't answer eMail.Stay away from this really BAD app!
It was great in its day but it hasn't been updated for a very long time. I haven't tried it recently though - all my RSS browsing is now done on my iPad.
My favorite newsreader by far. Being able to view the full web pages within the preview pane rather than opening them up in a full browser is what makes this one great.
For this to be #1 in RSS readers for Mac,
I believe it has to add the features:
1. Offline browsing! I can't believe I am the only one on dial-up. I quickly suck the news, go offline to avoid charges - and... bummer.
2. FavIcons for subscriptions, just like NetNewsWire has.
3. Option to use external browser.
Whoa, this is better than NetNewsWire and Shrook - and I have bought Shrook!
What does this NewsFan have that NetNewsWire doesnt.? Appart from that NetNews is free .??
The previous reviewers aren't doing this app justice. The ticker with the hot news filter are what sets Newsfdan apart from Netnewswire. It's a nice touch in a stable application, I found it to be a lot faster than NN on a Quicksilver G4. I'd like to see the filtering refined, so that i could get an alert for all Mac news, but not for Michael Shumacher.
I like having the browser right in the news reader, but NewsFans crashes every time I use it. It usually happens after 5-10 minutes of flawless performance. Frustrating.
It's stable, and it does allow you to read the feeds and blogs. But the usuability is nowhere. You can't drag and drop or subscribe to blogs or feeds you find via search. You can't bookmark them, either. This program is a proof-of-concept, but little else. It's certainly not worth $25.
Seems to be fast and provides good performance. However, you can't drag and drop to order groups, and it doesn't import Net NewsWire groups (they all become a single group). There is also no feature to open links in the background. The ticker and translation features are useless for me, and I'm not sure I would much care for the filtering, although it might be useful now and then.
