This has been the tagline of Armagetron, since, well, a very long time, and is probably the shortest and most accurate description possible. Tron was an arcade game based on the movie of the same name, release by Disney in 1982. The original game consisted of 4 sub-games, the only one of concern is the 'Light Cycles' one, in which the player uses a left/right joystick to control a 'Light Cycle' which leaves a wall behind it wherever the cycle it goes, turning only at 90 degree angles. The player must then get the AI to crash
What's New
Version 0.2.8.3.1:
fixed temporary sound disappearance when alt-tabbing away and back
Pros : Addictive arcade action with a nice overall feel to it. Multiplayer with humans is particularly enjoyable. Excellent value, since it is free.
Cons : AI cycles can be easily and repeatedly beaten once you find the correct sequence of turns, which makes single player somewhat dull. Graphics could be improved and music could have been added. Some sounds are unpleasant.
Not since Ambosia's Avara have I played such an addictive arcade style game online for the Mac. The physics to the tron light bikes are pretty incredible making for a game where experience gives the edge. Double binding, digging, and maze navigating are skills you gain over the hours/weeks/months of immersive playing. That non-violent aspect makes the game light hearted unlike those FPS. Some of the nicest fellow players I've encountered yet online. My only slight complaint is that some are a little discouraging to new players.
Adhering to the overall theme of the movie itself, Tron is played cross platform. Windows/Unix/Mac all play on the game grid. Ironically most of the kids who play this game weren't even born when the movie came out in 1982.
I write this review only because of my surprise this game isn't far more popular. It's free, you instantly start playing, the learning curve is quick, and there is infinite room to improve your tactics because there is always someone cleverer than yourself.
Hey this runs like a hundred times faster than my prev. versions, awesome , thanx guys.

An alternative: check out GL Tron X -- it hasn't been updated in awhile but still works great.

A non-developer put this update here on MacUpdate. This is a *beta* release, and it was never meant to be publicized like this.
The game is now known as Armagetron Advanced. The website is http://armagetronad.net
This mac build has a known problem, and again, was never meant to be widely circulated outside of curious users searching for bugs. Please use the latest stable release (0.2.7.1) if you are looking for stability.

Crashed on me (G5/Tiger) after the first time I died. I remember playing an older version that worked on my G3 iBook at least a year ago, and I liked it. Please fix the crashes :(

me again... I found the old version (Armagetron 0.2.6.0) on a CD I had made a while back. Tried it with the same settings I had the new version on... and NO crashes. Maybe the b is for buggy? :)

Armagetron Advanced is a Tron game clone in 3D.

The player must then get the AI to crash into their wall while avoiding hitting the AI's own wall themselves. Those were the humble beginnings of Armagetron Advanced's game play, which has now blossomed into 16 player mayhem, with highly advanced AI, network game play, and of course all in a 3D environment.

There is a bit more to it than just having good reflexes. You have to plan ahead and make sure to win as much terrain as possible.
So people, start playing it online and have some games with me!
