steps to duplicate Finder Must Die:

1. open script editor

2. type the following line into the window:
tell application "Finder" to quit

3. save as an application, uncheck the stay open and startup screen checkboxes.

How about that. I prefer Cocktail myself, a whole general purpose system util. with finder quit enabling. ;0

I must agree with the other reviewers. If you want to quit the Finder and you're lazy, get Tinker Tool, enable Finder quiting and you can then quit the finder form the dock.

This app is silly AppleScript Studio trash.

45KB for this line?

defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -boolean true;killall Finder

Just type the above in Terminal, and there you are....

And to remove the Quit....

defaults delete com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem;killall Finder

I know not everyone wants to use the Terminal, but this app is rather ridiculous. Get Tinker Tool if you don't want to type..... but 45KB for this... LOL

i've meant to reply to my reply for a while now, this *does* work in tiger. i am dumb and was looking for the quit option by right clicking the finder icon in the dock... the quit item is in the menu when you select finder.

what a dope, sorry.

These features are already in your system, you just have to enable them.

Get Tinker Tool, enable Finder's Quit menu item, enabled Dock's Finder Quit menuitem, done.

it's good if you are affraid your RAM isn't enough, or if you want to fully enjoy your desktop background.

one thing I would like to see is a preference so that Finder automatically quits when a certain program starts (think about the RAM eating LimeWire, or the X-Plane game)

or at least a feature that automatically quits Finder Must Die after quitting Finder. everything must go :-)

Many of the free and shareware maintenance utilities include this item as part of their feature set, such as Cocktail and Onyx.

I've got a Quit Finder item in my Finder menu. I think I prefer that one. Does exactly what I want, and has no annoying bugs.
