Maybe fun but old and lacking graphics. 2D. Recommend to check out Moon Lander instead.

A truly awesome game! If you enjoyed the original OIDS you'll love this one, if you never played it: here's your chance to see what a real game should be like.

Another great thing is the ability to create and download new levels, giving you endless hours of fun. (It comes with 11 galaxies, each consisting of several levels, so don't expect to finish the bundled ones anytime soon.)

Kudos to Kirk Baker for bringing this outstanding game to OS X. Also, I'd like to point out that the customer support is excellent.

Download and register it (worth every penny) right away!

I am so happy to have Oids back! Please download and register this game, you won't be sorry. Its a gem. The graphical updates are subtle but very well implemented and enhance the game without changing the classic look and feel.

Worth every penny.

After a long wait, OIDS.X has been released. I myself first saw this game back in the 1980's on an Atari ST, and was amazed at the variety of play within the game. Combined the best elements of Asteroids, Defender, and Lunar Lander, OIDS has stood the test of time, and is still one of the finest examples of the genre.

Attention to detail is a hallmark of OIDS; however, frilly 3D graphics this game is not. What sets OIDS apart, is its emphasis on PLAYABILITY; and everything that distracts from that is toned down, leaving you with nothing but good solid gaming action.

When this game was originally published back in 1988, it won a MacWorld Five Star rating. When things moved on to PowerPC, it got a rewrite, and still managed to retain the feel of the original. With the port to OSX, Kirk Baker has managed to do it yet again -- sacrificing none of the original feel of the game (even tuning it in some places), yet utilizing far better sound effects, higher resolution graphics, transparency, and OpenGL sprites in those places where it would actually improve and add to the game (including finer control of the starfield images, reactive smoke effects, and sharper image rendering).

True -- the graphics may not be as 'razzle-dazzile' as some users have grown accustomed to (especially with 3D games, and their emphasis on texturing and photo-realism), but after you've got bored with the eye-candy, what is it that keeps you playing? As generations of players who have grown to love this game will attest -- it's the feel -- that subtle interaction in the responsiveness of things. When its done right, there's something almost musical about the curves and maneauvers one can execute on the screen. You forget about the graphics really fast when a game isn't playable; its all about feel, and this game has it in spades.

What users wanted most is just to be able to keep on playing a good game unipmeded by a platform change. People have written Atari ST emulators just to play this one game. That OSX users can now play this game natively without the stuttering offered by running v2 in classic is reason enough to rejoice. This release gives OSX users access to a true and well-executed classic arcade game, and adds in some nice OSX-only refinements.

Check it out, try a download, and judge a game by how it PLAYS, and not just by how it looks. This one's a winner. Two thumbs up.

best regards,

Way cool! This game is one reason I'd kept my IIci for so long. I'll be registering soon. Any chance of a discount if we can produce our original OIDS floppy and documentation? :)

Seems harder than the original, though... or maybe my reactions have slowed with age. Nah...

Re: Somehow unfun compared to my memory of the original. Seems slow and crashed on me, too.

Wow, really? Everyone of my testers thought it was far better than the original in almost every way. They noted that the only thing I didn't change was the great game play and they were glad I didn't change a thing in that regard.

Since I am a one-man company, I pride myself in my work, and my level of support. I would really like to resolve any issues you had in running OIDS.X on your system. I am concerned that it crashed on you. OIDS.X had a fairly long beta test phase and it tested out very solid. If you could please let me know what your preferences were (Synchronize to Vertical Blank, Do page flipping, etc.) and what you were doing at the time, I will go out of my way to fix any problems.

As for slowness, this version runs much smoother than the original version by an order of magnitude. Just make sure you have "Do page flipping" turned on or it has to do a lot more work to draw the scene. Also, when you are playing the game, hit the 'esc' key and pause the game. In the lower right hand corner is a sizing gadget. You can make the playfield smaller and that will always speed things up.

I'm sorry to see such poor ratings on a product I have worked so hard on for so long but maybe others will rate OIDS.X better in the future.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Re: 20 dollars is a very high price to ask for a remake of someone else's game.

I am one of the original authors, so it is not "someone else's game." This is indeed a remake of the classic OIDS game, and a lot of effort (over a year's worth) has gone into making it more modern, and run nicely on Mac OS X.

The original game ran at 12 frames per second. This new version (when Synchronize to Vertical Blank is turned off) is capable of frame rates upwards of 150 per second in millions of colors at 1920x1024 and 300 frames per second at thousands of colors at that same resolution.

That's quite an improvement over the original.

All of the graphics have been redone in millions of colors, and are alpha blended into their backgrounds. All of the sounds have been redone to improve them over the simple Atari ST synthesized sounds that were then sampled at 11 kHz on a Mac Plus!
New sounds were added. New longer animations were added. And it still has that excellent game play that OIDS was noted for so many years ago.

$20 is the price of two movie tickets. If you like OIDS.X, I'm sure you'll get many dozens of hours of enjoyment out of it. A bargain in my book.

Thanks,

-Kirk
