What's New
Version 3.0.1:
New: DarkAdapted Pro: When changing between percentage and raw value displays using [tab] followed by [spacebar] in the Control Window, all Control Windows on all screens change to reflect the new type of display.
Fixed Control Window bug where tabbing to change Gamma values would only work when pressing [enter] and not when [tab] was pressed to move to the next field.
Changing values by tabbing to colors in Control Window no longer adjusts text in percentage mode.
Implementing Preset Set fade now updates Presets pop-up menu in Control Window.

I agree. This is fabulous software. However, the publisher's website is down so there's no way to purchase either a standard nor pro license. I would love to if I could, though.
I have downloaded the trial version and really like it. However, it seems that the developer is no longer supplying serial numbers for purchase. I would love to buy one. If the developer sees this post, please tell me how I can activate Darkadapted.
DarkAdapted 3.0.1 Pro is a recent update from AquilaDigital. I use the Macintosh version exclusively in my telescope observatory to help maintain my night vision while observing. The ease by which i can set my monitor screen to different intensities of red helps me use various programs ((such as “Where is M13”) when i host star parties and someone wants to know where a particular object is in the Milky Way relative to the Earth. Several programs do not come have the option of displaying a night adapted window, and so having a program which allows you to change the monitor display characteristics on the fly is extremely useful. It comes preset with various intensities of red or green, but a simple slider interface allows you to modify the monitor color quality and intensity to any value you want Another plus is that it comes with concise well written documentation which makes learning how to use it a breeze. I can say this is money well spent; it is the cat's meow!
When I retired and switched to a 27" IMAC, the screen was way to bright after dark with the room lights dimmed. This app works very well.
It is well supported by the developer...I sent him an email asking for a key combo for an activity I will do often, and within an hour he emailed me back asking if I wanted a link to the updated app.
Even with the standard version, I was quickly able to create and save some presets, using just the menus and not reading any 'how to,' with the normal amount of trial and error.
[About these stars: I was not able to change a rating, and it would not let me leave one blank! I HAVE NO IDEA AS TO STABILITY YET.
Great product. I've tried multiple screen-dimming apps and DA is the best I've used. This new beta seems to address some of the "ease-of-use" issues I've had with it (specifically dealing with its preferences) and a few kinks still need to be worked out, but it's definitely worth the price for those who need it.
The installer doesn't remove *any* files on installation. It places anything it moves into a "Moved By Installer" folder in the DarkAdapted Folder, and doesn't touch anything it can't move. So the original poster should look for a folder named "Moved By Installer" that contains archives of anything missing.
I'll have a new version up later today that performs additional error checking, but the existing build should be fine for those who install to a subfolder (the default) and not to the Applications folder itself.
This is a fantastic review and I use it daily because my cinema display is too bright at its lowest settings. I've got 3 wishes, though.
Wish 1: "Total system integration", where the standard brightness sliders and keyshortcuts would allow me to seamlessly dim down from full power (monitor brightness at 100%, DarkAdapted off) down to - say - 0.05% (monitor brightness at minimum, DarkAdapted at 5%).
Wish 2: some apps reset the gamma (like games playing at full-screen) and I would wish DA to prevent this.
Wish 3: DarkAdapted contstantly takes away about 1% of my cpu without doing anything. I would love if it could go down to 0%.
Regarding #1, I have been trying for quite some time to control the backlight from within DarkAdapted, and have been unable to locate any system calls to do that. If anyone knows how, I'd like to know! :)
Of course you can dim the *gamma* down to 0.00%, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you were asking.
On #2, you can keep other programs from hijacking the gamma by setting DarkAdapted's preference to refresh the gamma setting every so often. This works for screen savers, too.
About #3, DarkAdapted should remain at 0% CPU usage when it's in the background, and when it has not been set to periodically refresh the gamma values.
If DarkAdapted is above 0% when in the background (and not refreshing the gamma), something unusual is going on. DarkAdapted isn't doing anything at idle time.

DarkAdapted is being used by astronomers, planetarium operators, graphics professionals, medical professionals, airline pilots, air traffic controllers, and others worldwide to provide flexible, dynamic control over their monitor's screen color response. People with monitors that appear too bright (such as owners of certain iMac models), also find DarkAdapted to be valuable. Users may define an unlimited number of gamma presets, and invoke them via global hotkeys, by menu selection, or by typing the first few letters of a preset's name.
DarkAdapted Applications:
Dark adaptation - view screen in shades of red or green.
Reducing display brightness - turn down the brightness with a touch of a hotkey or at scheduled times.
Reducing monitor/display hum or buzz - a common cause is running an LCD backlight at less than 100% brightness. Turn the backlight to 100%, then use DarkAdapted to reduce the brightness.
Photographers - after color calibrating your display with a professional device, use DarkAdapted to tweak the colors for special applications.
Scotopic sensitivity - those with sensitivity to certain colors can often find relief via DarkAdapted's color adjustments.
Colorblindness - the display can often be tweaked so that color coded maps, etc. can be properly interpreted by the colorblind.
…and much more - we receive many reports of solutions involving DarkAdapted in addition to the above.

.... If no significant issues are reported, this will become DarkAdapted 2.3.5 final.
I hope not.
