SubRosaSoft RebuildDesktopX is a freeware utility for cleaning various caches on OS X that store information relating to the application binding, icons, etc. It is essentially similar to the old "rebuild the desktop file" found in older versions of Mac OS but not found in OS X.
Requirements
PPC, Mac OS X 10.1 or later.
Be the first to recommend a similar software title.
First, you look at the filename to see if that tells you anything about what the weird file is. Then look at the extension and see if you recognize it. What you should do with the file largely depends on those two things. Hope this helps.

This app still works under 10.3.7, I use it all the time on my iBook.

Two thumbs up! My OS X 10.2.6 system had gotten corrupted -- documents created by the app I'm building were suddenly bound to an "application" that was actually a hidden system folder named "501". I could temporarily rebind an existing document to my application, but every new document was bound to the "501" folder. Of course, document icons were blank.
RebuildDesktopX has cured this problem, with the added benefit of making application launching MUCH faster than it was. I suspect this may be due to the system cache file being reduced from 2.4 MB to 188 KB. I'm also seeing newer icons on some of my favorite documents.
When I unpack the file it has no extension. I added .app, no cigar. I added .term, no dice. I don't know how you can say that an app that doesn't open is great. UNLESS there's some additional information that neither you nor the software manufactuer(one in the same?) haven't divulged about how this application is supposed to "turn on." What's worse is that SubRosa doesn't even have the app anywhere on their site, which leads me to believe that it's a defective app. Any help here would be great.

This thing works, period. Has never caused even the slightest issue with my Macs and it is recommended by all the usual Mac gurus on the web. That's how I first heard about it, from Andy Inhatko (sp?), well-known Mac guru for at least a decade.

Anonymous, (previous poster).... WHERE ARE THESE CACHE DELETERS THAT DONT DO THIS ? There was one from CV Productions that no longer works at all.... is this the one you mean ?

It didn't destroy anything on my machine. Didn't lose any icons, etc. But then, I have a fairly new system to start with.

Needs a lot more work yet! It reverts all my 'open with' settings back to default. There are cache deleters that don't cause this problem.

Don't, Don't, Don't use this program!
All my PDF's are now Preview PDF's and my web graphics now belong to some piece of software I have never seen and I have to reassign them all. And a handful of documents are now blank and I don't know what they are. It fixed things alright.
