There also exist a version of AbiWord 2.4.4 which runs natively on IntelMacs (it is compiled for IntelMacs). It can be downloaded here :

This is the only program I've found to open WordPerfect (wpd) files, other than MacLinkPlus. It takes awhile, and the interface isn't pretty, but AbiWord has reliably opened every WordPerfect file I've thrown at it, and allowed me to quickly export it into RTF or a number of other formats.

Complete crap.

This program locks up every time I double-click a document to open it when AbiWord is already open.

Text is unreadable with wacked-out letter spacing. Sometimes letters completely disappear! This is completely inexcusable for a word editor.

Other features/ bugs? What's the point? If it can't even work at it's most basic function, there is no point in considering any other feature this program may have.

I just downloaded and used it for 10 minutes, and I have to agree that AbiWord 2.4.5 (on mac os x 10.4.8 on a powerpc) is simply unusable. As mentioned, text spacing is awful; can't tell where the cursor is; and Bold and Underline didn't work for the font that the app picked.

I never got far enough to try any other features. As mentioned by others, if I can't tell whether I have a space in the middle of a word or not, and can't tell where the cursor is, it is not a usable word-processing app.

[I'm really only rating value. putting 3 for the (other) ratings, which I'm required to fill in.]

I recently tried 2.4.5 under OS X 10.4 and found the fonts were impossible to read on screen. Keep in mind that the problem is only with the OS X version of Abiword. There may be very few developers (if any) committed to the OS X build.

I managed to find 2.2.11 which seems to work well and saves to M$ doc format by default with a little tweaking. I prefer it to the latest NeoOffice and OpenOffice offerings.

Am very keen to see a 2.4.5 version that works and has been compiled as an intel binary.

How sad... it seems like such a nice program otherwise, but the text/font problems that apparently have been around for a while mean it really is totally useless. I mean, who cares if you have right-to-left text rendering or whatever when you can't even tell where your cursor is?

I hate to rag on open source developers, but guys: adding more features at this point is like shoeing a dead horse.

What a disappointment. In its current state, AbiWord is unusable as even a simple text editor.

Why? The one thing any text editor/word processor should do is render the text perfectly...true WYSIWYG. AbiWord in its present state of developement for OSX cannot even claim that.

Regardless of the font used, AbiWord overlaps letter, will merge 2 letters to that they display and print on top of each other, cuts off the hanging portion of letters like g, j, p, q, etc. Spacing is hit or miss, with certain words spaced properly and other appear to be double-spaced.

AbiWord v 2.4.4 is not ready for primetime.

Wow... taking steps back. I agree with other posters - what the heck is going on with the text as you enter it? Try zooming on the page... characters start overlapping and don't get updated correctly.

I recall earlier versions being slow, but in a visually working state. This is just broken.

AbiWord is getting there. I try using it on a PowerMac G4, but the onscreen input(text and kerning) is so undependable that I often need to give up and use something else.

I am saddened that it is so visually hard to use.
