* iChat does voice and video.

* Skype does Mac/PC to Mac/PC and to phone.

So what's the point of this?

This can call videophones and 'netmeeting' style apps. Both of which pre-date ichat and skype by years, thus a lot of people use them

and it's free! iChat is not, unless you buy Tiger...

Also, even if other programs do everything this does, it doesn't mean that this has no point. Netscape used to be the only web browser, and then Internet Explorer came along and in a lot of ways did the job better. Now there's Safari, new versions of Netscape/Mozilla, Firefox, and lots of other browsers doing things better than IE. Why would you think that a program has no point if another app already does the same thing? It would be a pretty sad world if nobody ever competed.

iChat can only communicate with iChat. Skype can only communicate with Skype.

This program uses a protocol called H.323 and another protocol called SIP will be added in the future.

These protocols are being adopted by major telecom companies. There are also a lot of new 'telephones' (both on ethernet and on WiFi) that support this standard, you can also install a 'gateway' in your house that will allow you to make calls over internet with your existing equipment (in addition to using the old telephone lines). All these solutions are using the H.323 and SIP standards.

Your question should have been: why don't iChat and Skype use SIP or H.323?
The answer is: because standards take a long time to develop and deploy. iChat and Skype are intermediate solutions and they work nicely.

Works well for me. 10.3.8 etc. I can use this in a way I can't use gnomemeeting using gatekeepers and such. Could never get it to work with gnomemeeting. I use it for college. A fullscreen option would be nice though or at least maximize.

I believe you have to pay to have a voice over IP service. I dont know that theres any way to write a "use your mac as a telephone" app.

I'll be glad to see a competitor to Skype - never forget that Skype is by the same authors who wrote spyware Kazaa. Don't be fooled by the pretty icons.

This app isn't that competitor, but if I'm reading this right, it could well lead to one. Moreover, this is open, whereas Skype is not.

From the website, yo

to do PC-To-Phone calls

*

Step 1: Open the PC-To-Phone configuration window from the Tools menu and purchase an account. You absolutely need to purchase the account from the PC-To-Phone configuration window or it won't work.
*

Step 2: Wait for the mail that will give you a login and a PIN.
*

Step 3: Enter that login and PIN in the appropriate fields in the window and enable the PC-To-Phone service.

You are now ready to do PC-To-Phone calls at interesting rates all over the world. To dial a number, simply skip the "00" and enter your number directly. For example, h323:3210111111 to call number 10111111 in Belgium.

Ohphone 0.3.x requiree Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) and it will never work with 10.2 (Jaguar) because of changer to the video handling code. If you need Ohphone to work in Jaguar go straight to version 0.2.

I couldn't get it working. When I call the other party (PC on Netmeeting), my Ohphonex sais that the other party doesn't have the right codec.
I think it is better to wait until this ap works. For the time being I preferer iVisit
