Starfish X is a Mac OS X-native application which generates cool desktop patterns. It is based on Mars Saxman's original Mac OS 9 implementation of Starfish. The primary additions Starfish X makes over Mars's original program are:
Mac OS X native cocoa application.
Altivec-enabled and multi-threaded to take full advantage of today's dual (and single) processor G4 PowerMacs (it will also run on a G3 Macintosh, although much slower).
Support for multiple monitors (you can generate a different pattern for each monitor connected to your computer).
I tried this out yesterday and it still launches under OSX 10.6.4 on an i7. However it ran really slowly for some reason.
I tried disabling the Altivec usage, but that didn't seem to help.
I spent some time porting this very cool app to the Intel platform. If you just want to recompile it, it's easy, get the xcode project file. But it won't give you
a big speed improvement over a G4 or G5. In order to get more speed you'd have to port the Altivec code to SSE2 or SSE3. NOT ALL the Altivec instructions have exact equivalents on the Intel side (an example is the vector permutation instruction)....
I know this app hasn't been updated in a looooong time, but would it be much trouble to recompile it as a Universal Binary?

BTW - Tip! the program puts the images it creates in...

There's no longer an excuse for a boring desktop picture. Could be a bit faster.

This is a great application that I first saw on Macoshints.com I'm so glad that I downloaded and tried this. I've already saved many desktop designs that I love and have then alternating on my desktop. The color combinations are very appealing. HIghly recommend.
This has to be the absolute coolest non-productive application I've got my hands on in a long time. I have it set to create until recent cache is full (set to 500) and I review them later. I love good desktop pictures and I'm confident this will make my collection a LOT better. I came back to check the price because I was going to pay for it... Thanks!
Only one feature request that I can think of right now: I'd love to generate "full screen" at any resolution (like the ability to generate 1920x1200 desktop pics when I'm only using a 1024x768 screen)

Option to quit Starfish X when all patterns have been generated. (Perfect for use as a startup item!)
