Authoxy... If your connection to the Internet requires authenticating to a HTTP proxy, as is the case in many Australian universities, you may well have discovered that with Mac OS X, including Jaguar, many applications which require an Internet connection will simply fail. Some prominent examples are Software Update, MacHelp, parts of Quicktime, parts of iTunes (CDDB, Net Radio), and Sherlock. This is rather limiting. Authoxy is my solution. I run it full time now, and never have to worry about authenticating with the proxy again.

What's New

Version 3.6:
  • Implemented large changes to the compilation of PAC files, treating the PAC file as a whole and greatly improving the ability to compile complex PAC files.
  • Improved the memory management of the PAC file compilation environment.
  • Updated to the latest PAC utility routines.
  • Improved compatibility with standard "dnsResolve" PAC function.
  • Added support for "myIpAddress" PAC more...

Requirements

Mac OS X 10.2 or later

According to the developer's news site, there is Snow Leopard support:

Authoxy 3.5 is out, new with Snow Leopard support. Authoxy is now delivered in full 64bit goodness. Recommended update for all Leopard and Snow Leopard users.

An absoute God send of a program!!
After three years of living at a University in Melbourne and trying to get my Mac to intergrate with the system, i have finally found this program, and now it seems that ALL my problems are solved!!
System Update now works, as does Akype, Hotmail (which i could only ever access through IE and not Safari), the iTunes song direcotry auto naming thingi, and many other websites that were constantly asking for my username and password, such as MSN weather. I would highly recommend to anyone connecting over a proxy network.

Using Safari 2.0.3 here, it downloads fine from the download link here at MacUpdate.

That page of stuff that you got from the developer's site was actually the compressed code of the application download, but for some reason your browser apparently is not detecting the MIME type of the file to be downloaded and therefore presented you with a page of code instead of downloading the file properly. If you encounter this issue ever again, remember to OPTION-click on the download link.

I've been having trouble accessing anything that gioes through .asp or .aspx with authoxy (such as several sites with "logins"). I'm not sure if I'm an isolated case, but I was checking to see if anyone else has had these issues.

University users, Authoxy worked great for me for the following application:

Many university libraries allow home access to site-licensed journals via a .pac (secure auto proxy configuration) file.

OS X version 10.3.2 and above allow you to specify the location of the .pac file that you need for journal access, _but_ Safari fails to recognize that you also need to enter a password and username to access the journals, leaving you high and dry.

To fix this, set up your local web proxy information as in the Authoxy documentation, then start Authoxy, giving it your library username and password where it says "Proxy Authentication Details" and giving it the location of the .pac file where it says "Use this automatic configuration (.pac) file".

Voila, site licensed journal content, visible in any browser.

i have trouble with the startAuthoxy program failing. i've reinstalled twice per it's suggestion, and it still fails. Authoxy itself is stable as the day is long, but without startAuthoxy working i have to launch it manually after login. minor problem, but a problem nevertheless.

Hello,
Was wondering if you were able to ever solve this problem. I continue to run into it also. It is a bit annoying to have to tell users to go to system preferences to manually start the app. thanks

Fabulous! Solved that pesky problem to 10.2 not being able to access software update (like it used to in 10.1). Can also access the iTunes music store and other useful sites. Make sure to carefully read the instructions, as there are a few simple steps, but you must follow all of them!!!

Authoxy is a great tool which allowed my OS X systems to use Software Update from behind a Microsoft ISA firewall. It adds authentication information to any network traffic.
The setup isn't exactly intuitive, but this isn't a tool that most people need. If you've configured a firewall, then you should have the skills to install this.
Overall, a great tool, because it addresses oversights that neither Apple nor Microsoft have figured out yet.
