PDFs are typically larger than the source word-processor documents, so indeed it would be nice if they could be made smaller, and that of course is what this software claims to do.

I tried the earlier (classic) version of this software and found it quite good. But this version disappointed me, though I hope it's a glitch they'll fix. Here's what I found:

This time I tested it with two documents, [1] a 656K document that was made from a 2-page, 3-columns per page, 256K Word document with graphics (GIFs & JPGs), printed to a PDF file via Mac OS 10.2.8 print menu, which results in a file of 656K, and [2] a 36K no-graphics Word file from which the OS converts to a 56K PDF.

Using PDFEnhancer's settings for ‘web', ‘screen', ‘office printing', & even ‘proofing' the resulting files were all *larger than the original*, but that didn't deter the program from cheerily claiming "success". How does one justify making a file larger, as content cannot increase, can it? Using the setting for "booklet" did reduce the file size to 628 K, but this is nowhere near the reductions suggested AND it lost the page arrangement, placing two pages on one, AND in the wrong order. Suggestions for the software: [1] save time by saying “can't improve this one”, [2] say “oops” instead of “success” when it creates a larger file, and [3] at least indicate the best settings to use for the greatest reduction. The information manual is not written for the person in a hurry.

How fast is it? Maybe we should say how slow is it? With a 700 Mhz g3 iBook, 364 MB, PDFE took just under a minute to over 4 minutes for "screen" and over 10 mins (triple-yipes) for "hqprint", and both made the file larger (yipes again). Maybe my little brochure was the document-from-hell, so how did it do with the simple little words-only 56K PDF? PDFE was, this time, blazingly fast at 0.63 seconds it said, and produced a file that was, you guessed it, 56K. This cannot be what the software was intended to do, so I hold out hope that there is a simple fix that will restore the meaning of the word “success”.

PDFE's user guide, on the other hand, is about 35 pages with over 20 graphics (screen shots), and it is only 1MB. That is the kind of performance I'd hoped for. For the heck of it, I submitted it to PDFE to see if it would make it bigger (this might hint that the User Guide might have been expertly reduced by something else). But it refused, reporting “Failed”.
