What’s new in version 3.4.0 237

Updated on Oct 22 2020

Version 3.4.0 237:
Added
  • Smartlists, also known as ""Smart Playlists,"" are playlists generated by a user-defined filter. All tracks added to the collection that match the filter will automatically show up in the Smartlist. A new Smartlist is created via "Create Smartlist" in the context menu (right-click) of the Playlists tree node.
  • The browser list can now be sorted by a second column via Shift-clicking the column header. This allows you to sort by BPM within a list already sorted by Key for example.
  • Integrated tracking and mapping of the RANE Twelve MK2. Configuration is semi-automatic via the Setup Wizard.
Improved
  • Increased robustness, fewer unexpected behaviours and fewer crashes in dealing with audio files metadata.
  • Implementing new drawing mechanism on macOS which removes blurry UI or additional CPU toll.
  • The order of folders, playlists and SmartLists in TRAKTOR's iTunes node now matches the order in iTunes/Music.
  • The contextual search icon (magnifying glass) is now only visible on hover, which makes the track list look much cleaner.
  • New browser columns in the track list, are now added to the left of the selected column and thereby instantly visible.
  • Expanded and collapsed states of browser tree nodes are now visualised and controlled by a leading triangle. The mouse interaction is now identical to the macOS Finder.
  • The expanded/collapsed states of all browser nodes are now correctly restored after restarting the application.
  • The color picker menu, so far only available in the Color column is now available in all columns of the track list.
  • The saturation of the row coloring and the color dots in the Color column has been increased for better visibility.
  • The icons used in the browser have received a facelift making them more consistent and readable.
  • The spacing of the browser tree has been slightly increased to improve usability.
  • The contrast of the track list font has been increased for better visibility when scrolling.
  • The Search Bar is now highlighted when in focus which prevents overlooking an active filter when browsing.
  • The default column layout has been overhauled based on their frequency of use.
  • The highlight when selecting an entry in the track list and when dragging a track onto a playlist has been dimmed to make it easier on the eyes and increase readability of the selected text.
  • The spacing and layout of the Favorites, Track Info and Status Bar sections have been overhauled and refined.
  • The vertical scrollbar handle now has a minimum size at small track list window sizes for improved mouse control.
  • The deck header now shows an error message if the player detects streaming errors.
Fixed
  • The Release Date now correctly shows year, month and day value for all supported file types instead of defaulting to January 1st.
  • The Release Date tag no longer gets created a second time when analysing mp3 files.
  • The Grouping tags ""contentgroup"" (TIT1) and ""composer"" (TCOM) are no longer removed from the files, when closing the application.
  • Keyboard shortcuts no longer stop working when editing the name of Hot Cues in the Advanced Panel.
  • The icon column is now sorted correctly with the missing tracks on top instead of sorting them to the bottom.
  • Special characters in playlist and folder names are now correctly displayed in the Favorites section.
  • A specific corruption of the Collection is now detected and automatically repaired, fixing incorrect search results.
  • A specific corruption of the Collection is now detected and automatically repaired, fixing wrong tracks to be loaded when loading directly from Finder into the decks.
  • JPG cover art imported from memory via drag and drop is now correctly imported and shown.
  • ID3 tags of .mp4 files are now correctly shown, also when their tags are formatted as ""mp4"".
  • The search in all fields now excludes the UUID of the tracks, which excludes meaningless search results.
  • The search in all fields for i.e. ""123"" now also returns tracks that have non-integer BPM (i.e. ""123.45"").
  • The search for BPM, bitrate, and catalog number no longer returns a Syntax-Error.
  • Importing large libraries of 100k tracks from the Music app is no longer too slow.
  • Lyrics from OGG, FLAC and MP4 files are now correctly read and written to and from the collection.
  • The rightmost columns in the History List no longer disappear when hiding other columns in that view.
  • The vertical tree scrolling is more stable now when browsing a fully expanded tree with the mouse.
  • The selection and focus on a Playlist is no longer lost after renaming or when dragging it into a folder.
  • This issue observed by certain users has been fixed.
  • This reproducible crash when searching in playlist while selecting a parent folder in the tree, has been fixed.
  • This crash observed by certain users in context of using a display controller has been fixed.

I have tried various DJ apps, both before I got Traktor and after, but I keep coming back to Traktor (Pro 2, now) because of its features, flexibility and quality. Its auto beat matching means I don’t need a physical controller in order to DJ smoothly, although it supports a plethora of physical interfaces. The ability to remap the keys to my choosing means I can enable thing to my liking and disable show stopping features other DJ apps don’t allow: I love that I can disable stop/start on the space bar, and there’s a preference to lock playing decks from loading. Both of these prevent that sudden dead air scenario I have seen other DJs do when they accidentally cue the wrong deck or slip and hit the wrong button. I use Traktor with an Native Instruments AudioDJ4 external USB audio IO which has 4 in, 4 out. This is no longer sold, but Traktor sounds great through this and I can assign the inputs to go through the box in case inputs on the DJ board are not enough to accommodate all DJs input needs. I also like that it can read the iTunes library complete with playlists immensely. I think this is a great feature because I can use iTunes to find the tracks I want to play through casual listening between events and don’t have to do any thing tedious to remake a playlist or find tracks. This is one feature that keeps me coming back, because other DJ apps only read their own libraries, meaning you have to either work in them only or do double duty for making playlists. Traktor’s internal playlist edit and cue system is also very powerful. I have tried to make it crash with over 20,000 tracks, but it handled tat many just fine. (I have since rebuilt the library and have a modest thousand or so tracks in it that I draw from routinely.) Adding new tracks or playlists is as easy as importing from the finder or iTunes. Upon import, it reads the key tag for those of you DJs that have discovered harmonic mixing, so finding the net song isn't completely dependent on you memory. Of course it also calculates BPM at that time too, to enable easier beat matching. If it gets the track’s beat sync wrong, you can adjust the grid of each song, along with setting in/out, cue and loop points that it remembers in its own library. In practice that means it only takes one listen (often during or just before a DJ session) to practice and set this stuff up, then the next time you play any cue or loop points you have previously set are recalled the next time. One of the few complains is that if the USB audio interface is abruptly removed or the setting for the output quality is changed, the application or even the entire computer will crash, meaning a painfully slow reboot process. This might have been fixed within the past year, but it is something I never test anymore, and it as been over year since that happened (luckily this only has happened a few times while I was just practicing at home). The other complaint is that sometimes, if I sleep the computer, upon waking it up, Traktor will hang, necessitating a command-option-escape to force quit it. This hasn’t happened for a few versions so, I think the Native Instruments developers have solved the sleep issue at least. Overall I would recommend it to any Digital DJ since its flexibility means it can fit well in so many different types of DJ’s play styles.

I've been a user since the first beta early century. I now own Traktor Pro 2 and am very happy with the new stuff such as ability to change pitch independent of tempo to make harmonic mixing possible. I always tempo mix, not the autobeatmix stuff which destroys music IMHO. Sometimes I have to set a beat marker and after that the tracks mixes very nice for a long time with some manual adjustment and behaves very close to vinyl and CD. If you have that talent as I do it's no different. I love the filters and the possibility for different controllers. I'm using Ableton Push as a Controller, but looking at the external versatile mixer Z2 so I can mix vinyl seamless with digital and timecode disc control. The support for audio formats is great. I even play 24bit FLACs direct from artists hard disks, apple lossless, AIFF, AAC and the occasional WAV.It all works, even if it doesn't play in iTunes. I also own Live 9, but prefer Traktor for DJ'ing. It's so close to Vinyl andI love DJ'ing with vinyl. I use this in Mavericks on a Macbook Pro from 2007! It works so well!

Wow, this hasn't gotten a review in a while. I suppose having control externally would be a good thing to have... several versions ago. And anyone complaining about not being able to play iTunes songs, I hope you don't ever perform with iTunes purchased songs. Even iTunes Plus songs are nowhere near the right quality to perform with. iTunes songs sound like crap coming out of big speakers. It's a very good thing iTunes songs don't work.

Platform: OS10.3 on iBook G3 600 Running Traktor DJ Studio 2.6 Pros: 1/It's one of the few alternatives to PCDJ that runs on a Mac. Works reasonably well. 2/Plays AAC encoded songs 3/Looks cool Cons: 1/DOES NOR PLAY AAC encoded songs whith DRM: That means ANYTHING bought at iTunes Store (How LAME is that?) 2/I have not been able to upload iTunes playlists, although Traktor DJ Studio does "see" the playlists. 3/Tech support kinda useless for Macs. (They have been incapable of solving this issue.) 4/ Tempo adjust requires > 1GHz processor clock speed.

Hmm - perhaps these other macs are unstable. i have the program, yes you CAN integrate it with iTunes. Read the manual. It works perfect in both window mode and full-screen mode. very stable, never a problem with it. But then again, i wouldn't know what i'm talking about - i own my own DJ business and i've sound designed radio commercials, tv spots and web sites. It works fine with OSX
